Default Alternator how to use

So I apparently have an alternator on my car, we about to hook up battery, but not sure what to do. How do I know if the alt. is six or twelve volt? Does it have a positive or neg. ground? How do I connect the battery, which terminal to ground? Does this effect the distributor in any way, or the coil? Complete idiot as to lectricity!

Can you see anywhere on the case where it was restamped 6V POS GRND?

Since it's painted black, appears to be a one wire conversion, and in a Model A there's a good chance it is 6 volts pos grnd, but if you don't see any markings, then take it to a generator/starter shop and see if they know.

Take Tom's advice as there are "kits" to make them 6,8,12 volt positive or negative ground.

Wait a minute, any light bulbs still in the car? Look up the number and see what voltage they are. That will get you 1/2 way there.

After that you can test for the ground. Install the battery with positive ground, then connect connect test light between the output post and output wire. Do not touch the wire to the post, just place the light in between. The output post, one wire for the test light, the other test light are to the cars wiring. If the test light lights bright, turn the battery around and use negative ground. When you have the correct ground the test light shouldn't light.
