ignition button question F1
My F1 (49) will crank with out the key in but will not spark unless the key is in.
This is dangerous because I'm afraid the kids will hit the starter button and if it's in gear then we have a dangerous situation. I don't park in gear because of this but with the bench seat the kids are all over the place and can easily knock the sifter into a gear. Is this the way it was factory wired? I'm sure I can wire a secondary disconnect for the starter button but there must be a way to move a wire around on the back of the key terminal so the starter button has no juice unless the key is in and turned on. You could wire in a relay that pulls in when the ignition is on, and completes the circuit to the starter button. The starter button earths a wire coming from the solenoid. You would break into this wire with the relay.
Or as an alternative you could fit a battery disconnect and knock it off when you know the kids are coming. Or just tell them not to touch nuthin. Mart. |

This may be one reason it is against the law to leave kids alone in a parked car. If someone gets hurt, who do you think will be blamed? It's never a good idea to let kids play in or around cars.

To answer part of your question; yes, that is the way Ford wired it from the factory and it has its benefits when you are working on the engine. The suggestion of a battery disconnect is a simple and easy solution.

Vic,
battery disconnect in the cab or something that is under the hood? This is a daily driver. Can't I just hook up a simple toggle switch someplace under the dash inline with and to disrupt the starter button?

A toggle switch will work fine. The relay is a very good idea but the switch is a lot easier to wire.

You can hook up a toggle switch as you suggest however, the battery disconnect has other advantages as well, (when you shut off the power you can't inadvertently leave the ignition or the headlights on...) You can install a simple disconnect at the battery (I don't recommend those) or install a much better one under the hood or inside the cab. Our '53 F-100 Panel truck had a battery disconnect switch mounted under the floorboard (near the battery box) with the switch knob between the driver & passenger seats.

Bob Shewman, sells a heavy duty shutoff (for 6 volt systems) that mounts on the battery post. That's what I have and then the whole system is shutdown. Those cheap import green ones are junk and can't handle 6 volt systems properly.

Get a NAPA pushbutton STB 10, 1952 truck. Power the switch from accessory post on dash switch, use old wire to go to new solenoid. Swap your solenoid for 6V ST 58, a grounded base 6V Ford one that works from swithc on hot side. Now ignition switch must be on for the thing to crank.
Or...cheaper...discard the starter and use the provision for a handcrank. |

I'm going to use the little toggle switch that is used to power the dash lights. I will have those on all the time and use that toggle to interrupt the push button starter switch.
My kids are not feeling around for switches but they do go for the horn and before it happens they might hit the starter button. Don-wi I'm in and out of the truck 10 times a day. I can't just roll up the windows, lock the drivers door, slide over to exit the passenger door close that and lock it each time I get out of the truck. Thanks for all the help guys
