I'm in a bit of a predicament while putting together my 1935 Ford 5w coupe. The car didn't come with a seat so I sought out to get one in nice condition. I found one that had been recently upholstered and bought it without thinking twice. Well it turned out to be a '37 seat I believe.

So then I have $300 in this seat and I can't turn back so I then bought a '36 base as well as the wood side panels and the "flip up" wood back frame so I can mate the two.

I think mating the two isn't going to be difficult once I see how they go together. I'm concerned about that back flip up panel and how it situates itself over the trans tunnel. Just it position right over the trans tunnel and then nailed into the side panels?

I'm looking for any pics (from behind, front and sides) that you guys might have. Pics of the seat assembled outside of the car is even better. I'm also looking for advice, tips and parts that I might need to complete the seat.

The flip up panel goes on the seat back like this:

The backrest support is screwed into the plywood sides.

I don't see how the trans tunnel would have anything to do with it unless you don't have the seat tracks.

I'll have to go take a pic of what I have. When I set that back piece into the car and then the side pieces, it appeared to me that the back piece was taller then the side pieces which is where everything got fuzzy for me. I have the seat tracks and everything bolts up nicely there. I'm wondering if there is an extra piece of wood attached to the bottom of mine that might not have to be there.

There is a piece of wood below the seat pan that goes over the tunnel.

So that is wood. Mine was replaced with metal...

You could use the metal piece, but you need to bolt in the tracks and remove the metal piece and then locate the tunnel and cut out the steel to fit. I believe this originally was there to prevent items from going from under the seat backward as well as items behind the seat from moving forward under the seat. Just a guess, it is not structural to the seat at all.

Aha!!! See that torque tube tunnel was really what I am missing. I can't imagine why it's not there or why if someone replaced it they wouldn't have needed to cut that out unless it was front whee drive now

If that's what's holding it up from aligning with the side boards I'll get the old Jig saw out tonight and cut her up!

Yes it has a cutout already. I didn't know what the original looked like, thanks.

It was already together when I removed it. I haven't started cleaning it up, yet.

I'm not building a points car so if they look decent and work well, I'll be leaving it alone. I do like to use whatever original item I can.

Hmm, my seat doesn't have that piece with the cut out. But I don't have the stock floor either.

You need to assemble the seat boards and side boards and then upholster the side panels. The inside of the side boards is where the upholtery is tacked in place.

This makes sense since how would I be able to screw the sides into the back if I upholstered them first. Thanks for the tip!

Tinker, thanks for the heads up. I'm going to head to the Depot and see what I can come up with. I'll have to take a better look at my seat to see exactly what I am missing.

Oh Geez, I don't want to be the guy that suggested home depot fasteners over possible better quality ford fastener suppliers.

The fastener in second photo looks like the insert that would be installed in the soul of a cork logging boot. My grandfather was a cobbler and I spent many summers helping him repair boots. He had jars full of those fasteners they had barbs on them that pressed into the leather much the same as they could into wood. Check with your local shoe repair shop they may have them.

jk: The 36 seat back hinged and could elevate to open the rear of the seat area for storage. There was a latch similar to the deck lid on trunk models that held the backrest open. 35 did not hinge, the backrest was fixed. During 35 there was a change to the seat and the backrest became shorter. About 4" shorter than the mid and early 35 seat.
