Interesting horn issue

I smoked my good horn the other day while charging my battery which ran down because I forgot to turn the ignition switch off or throw the battery disconnect switch since the engine stopped on it's own when I ran the carb dry. I don't know how the horn got a complete circuit but it did.
Anyway I found a "model A horn motor on e-bay with 2 hrs to go. Got it for $25 with absolutely no guarantee- which was ok for the amount .
It did work but when I put it all together it sounds like a continuous duck quacking.
I don't think it is really for a Model a. What do you think.
It has one screw hole in the back to hold the cover on.
It has the adjusting screw for the diaphragm on the plate with a lock nut, which means total dissasembly to adjust it.
The part that hits the ratchet wheel is round not like a flat blade like my old one.
The cover was two pieces not one.
The sound is so bad I am sure I could win the "Ugly Horn" contest. However I am street legal. It will have to do until I can save up for a real Model A horn.

Your old motor is fully rebuildable. Find out what it needs and fix it, or have it fixed if it is an original ford horn.

Sounds like you might have a JC Whitney replacement horn. I had one and it actually sounded as good as the original horn.

I had one of those replacement horns back in the '60s. It sounded great when adjusted well.

It is so hard to adjust. You must remove the horn, then remove the 6 mounting screws to get at the adjustable screw on the diaphram. I really don't see an easy way to do this. Unless I am missing something.

I would but the adjustment must be made from the front. That would require removing the screen and using 12" long special tools to do the adjusting.

Is that really an adjustment on the diaphragm,or is it just a slotted place to hold the ratchet still while tightening the jam nut? The adjustment should be a bar across the back that puts more or less pressure on the armature.I have a few old thirties horns,most have a slot in the end of the screw as you look in from the front.It's not an adjustment,it's just an aid to get it tight when assembling.

You may have hit on the answer. I didn't think about the armature pressure being an adjustment.
