Service Letter for '57 E-code passenger car

A reputable source once told me about the existence of '57 Ford Service Letter for E-code (dual quad) passenger cars. It advises cutting an inch off the oil fill pipe to gain better clearance between the breather cap and air filter housing. Is anyone familiar with this Service Letter or know how I can obtain a copy?

Now this is interesting. I never heard that but it may be. You know I am sure there is a special valley pan for the E-CODE.

I shall return (it took MacArthur how long?).

Can you measure your tube ... ... er, oil filler tube?

The OEM 1954-57 pan filler tube was 9.06" H

The OEM 1955/57 BIRD and 57 S/C tube was 7.56" H

The OEM 1957 FORD/BIRD E-CODE tube was 6.48" H

You pan does have a depression under the intake plenum?

Mercman from Oz is right, and I gotta say... I have the best kind of wife a man could ever have. She had no problem with me heating up the air cleaner housing IN THE KITCHEN OVEN before I brought it back to the shop for paint. She said, "Why not, you've got that thing as clean as a whistle - ain't going to hurt anything." When I told the dear lady that after our move to Lancaster, CA we will be only 40 minutes from El Mirage and land speed racing, she said, "That sounds like fun, maybe you can take your car out there too." Then I explained the deal on land speed racing, top speed, etc. My wife quickly replied, "I don't know about all that!" with her hand on her hips. She's a gem!

Kultulz - most of my parts are already loaded in boxes on pallets for the trip out west. It will be a while before I can measure for you.

Well, I managed to get hold of the original source of my information. Felix Natoli, who is a walking encyclopedia on Y-blocks and especially the dual quad variety, dug up Product Service Letter P-351 dated July 16, 1957. Item #10 (attached) deals with the subject at hand.

No, KULTULZ, the cap doesn't contact the housing. It's just a little awkward when removing the cap with the housing in place.

Personally I'm not going to perform the workaround described. Just wanted the Ford documentation that things are a little tight in that area.

By the way, and to answer your earlier question, the tube length conforms to the spec you gave.

Felix has provided me the correct accelerator return springs, distributor advance vacuum line, and choke tube insulators, along with a good deal of sagely advice. He's a marvel at close to 90 years of age.

Just thought I would update this thread with today's interesting discovery. While the factory oil fill pipe on a dual quad passenger car does accommodate the standard black breather cap, it is too long to allow the larger chrome breather cap to fit under the air cleaner housing. I surmise this to be the genesis of the service letter cited above. I had switched out my black painted valve covers for the finned aluminum ones, and because these are part of the engine dress-up kit I thought I should switch out the breather cap for the dress-up chrome version. No dice, unless I want to trim down the oil fill pipe. Put that in your oil fill pipe and smoke it, haha.

Again, that info is muchly appreciated. I was never a fan of the FYB until I stumbled across y-blocksforever.com and saw what those guys were doing with them.
