Differential rebuild
I took a differential apart.
I installed new bearings etc. When I put it back together, I ended up with approx. 22 thou of gaskets on each side to get the backlash and preload correct. All the reading I have done indicate between 10-15 thou. I have checked all bearing seats etc. for interference. Is that too many gaskets? |

Re: Differential rebuild
That's a lot of gaskets I think, There are shims for the carrier bearings that will reduce the number of gaskets but, after pulling off the bearings and installing the shims, you will have to start over calculating the preload. Back to square one. Now I wish I had done as described. Good time to check the shoulders on the carrier for signs if having spun a bearing.

Re: Differential rebuild
.040+ is a lot of gaskets! Was this a mix match of parts? I had one that I was ending up with way too many housing gaskets, it was a mixture of parts. We ended up taking a cut off the carrier to seat the bearings closer to center.
Adding the shims will move the bearing out which will require more gaskets not less. I would pull it back down and check first that the cups and bearings are fully seated. |

Re: Differential rebuild
Some of the new timken carrier bearing races are slightly thicker than original. this rquires more gaskets.
I have a lot of gaskets in my tudor and driven 22K miles. I would not worry about it if it is all set up. One way to fix it is have races surface ground 005" on back side. John |

I thought about touching up the backs of the races. Could the same thing be done by turning a bit off the bearing landing on the differential cage? |

Re: Differential rebuild
I checked for proper seating as well and they were down as far as they could go.

Re: Differential rebuild
Thx all for you responses.
Yes I was going with Tom Endy's procedure. I actually am doing the exact thing he was--using the later banjo and earlier axle housings. His procedure how ever does not address anything about my situation. |
