Seeking info on Admiral Byrd's Model A
We have a close friend who is heading to the Antarctic and I recall that many years ago when Admiral Byrd was in the Antarctic, circa late 1920's, he had a Model A Ford with him. That when he returned it was left there and the theory is it may still be there buried deep in snow. Can anyone provide details that I could pass on to my friend. I ran my sketchy info by her and she will inquire while she is there. It may have been a tractor type Model A, not a car.

Re: Seeking info on Admiral Byrd's Model A
What are the Americans doing in Antarctica? Oh yeh, probaly the same as the Russians and Chinese.
If that Model A is found, I hope they drained the cooling system. Probably didn't need and coolant down there anyway!.

Re: Seeking info on Admiral Byrd's Model A
It appears Byrd took "two Ford snowmobiles" on his second expedition (1933-35) and had to abandon them when they returned. One article that I read online gave the location, which I've promptly forgotten. Maybe they are still there. I found a picture of them on "The Old Motor" dated January 20, 2014. The caption states "Super Snow Bird-Model 'A' and 'B' Snowmobiles". He also had three French Citroen half-track tractors that seemed to be used the most, as well as one Cletrac tractor.

The great man himself says that the North Pole is full, and there are no women. He seems to be concerned about the Australians being there and mentions it several times ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czW0iRJuH1A Supposedly this would be from the 1st expedition https://kb.osu.edu/handle/1811/28044 Altho, it doesn't seem to be mentioned in supplies http://www.admiralbyrd.com/1st-byrd-...n-1928-29.html This seems to be from the second expedition http://kegresse.dk/la-croisi%C3%A8re-antartic.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDu3g-j5kSg |
