If you can see it with your own eyes it's worth the effort. Is the fare Maryland/Texas prohibitive?

Having said that, I recently bought a car from Florida (I'm in Australia). I was prepared to go see it, but there was a time element so I paid an assessor to check out the car.

He inspected and drove the car the following day, sent me a few hundred pics and we had a candid discussion covering his impressions over the phone.

Turns out the car was 'driver quality'. The price was right and I proceeded with the deal. I've heard mixed stories about assessors, but maybe I got lucky. It's a good car and I'm extremely happy.

In Arizona after moving from Indiana when I went to get my truck registered they just re-titled it from the paperwork and never went out to check the numbers. However it was keeping the same titleholder info..
I would call DMV and ask what the requirement s will be. That doesn't insure that the person you deal with will do it that way...but.

In California you can get different answers from different DMV clerks. Go prepared with all the knowledge you can get and have plenty of money. They have a charge for everything.

You bring a trailer with you when you go pick it up or another
driver & drive it home if it will make the trip.
