Default pressure plate adjustment problems

Lightened flywheel tried two rebuilt plates and both have about 1" space from cover..is it possible to shim the plate ? very difficult to loosen adjusting screws and they are already to the end..the gauge in photo is set at 5/16" gap is still about 1/4" ..any ideas anyone ? how to loosen bolt and nut ?

to raise the levers you need to tighten the nuts---or get a thinner clutch disc --stock thickness with the cushion springs compressed is .340 in the Ford book---the book also says that the fingers should be 3/4 " below

a hacksaw blade can cut the stake, screwdriver in the slot, wrench to turn---you can't force it or you will bugger up the slot

the 32-48 repair man---trans, clutches, overdrives, and power takeoffs #3697-47 gives you all the rebuild specs and procedures

When the flywheel was lightened the clutch surface was likely machined. The mounting surface where the pressure plate mounts should also have been machined to restore the factory distance between the mounting surface and the clutch surface. The dimension should be 1.123".

The gauge you are using should be set between 3\4" and 5\8" (11\16" being nominal). Most reproduction pressure plates as delivered are out of adjustment. You have to break the stake on the stud in order to turn it. Use a box wrench and a screwdriver to make the adjustment. Lock-tight the threads when done.

I agree with checking the finger height also. They apparently aren't properly assembled and it's a lot easier the first time rather than taking things all apart.
Try to keep all fingers to within .002"

The machinist should have removed equal amounts from the clutch surface and the pressure plate mounting surface. If he didn't find another machinist

As Kurt said, to raise the levers, you need to TIGHTEN the nuts, so I don't see a problem with what you have.

I have used a small ratchet that takes an allen head screw driver combo and adjusted those screws. Hard to break the stake loose,,,,,,,,,,,,ya. But looking at your pictures, in the first and third picture it almost looks like half of the screw was broken away. Maybe?

I used a Dremel with cut-off wheel to cut the stakes. Much easier than a hack saw.

To help those with P Plate problems..turn 6 slotted bolts with lock nuts to slot Tangent with P plate..use hack saw in slot to break/cut penned area..put 1/2" wrench on nut with put good screw driver in slot ..hold S driver and turn nut to adjust...worked good in my case even though lightened flywheel had been machined wrong ..got into spec with no problem ...really easy once you get the hang of it..Thanks to all folks helping on this.sc

If you have the clutch out of the car you can substitute correct length flat head allen bolts. Use metal grade c prevailing torque nuts(lock nuts). You can also get new bolts and nuts from a clutch shop if old bolts get damaged.
