There is still a choice here. I have had the pleasure of owning a number of drivers and a pair of trailer queens. The 'drivers' are great for pleasing yourself in the present time. Correctly restored 'trailer queens' should be viewed, in my opinion, as a testament to the accurate preservation of American history as provided by the single greatest contributor to the Industrial Revolution in the greatest country in the free world, and as such can provide knowledge and pleasure for those in generations to come when most of the 'drivers' will be by the wayside.

It would seem appropriate to be able to choose whether you are interested in your own current pleasure as opposed to providing a piece of history and enjoyment for generations to come.

As always, just a thought from an old man!

BTW, when I see a fork in the road, I stop and pick it up. My wife still reminds me not to eat with my fingers when I am in public.

I couldn't agree more about choice. Although my vehicles are drivers and are rarely trailered, I certainly enjoy viewing the so called "trailer queens" that are preserved so well. And so many "trailer queens" are driven, once they have achieved competition awards. Choice is a good thing! Enjoy the variety of the hobby.

Don't be so harsh on 'ol Doug. One of the best things that I have learned from getting old is each persons response to anything can only be arrived at from the number of their life's past experiences. A parrot is a bird with some flight ability. A sparrow flies daily, and an eagle flies very high, and has keen eyesight. Each bird has their own perception of the earth's surface based on their flight experiences, but the eagle has the best perspective!

Based on the aforementioned life experiences I have not yet encountered any one of the above mentioned birds that can spell 'Queen' correctly.

Don't get me wrong, I love the shows and museums. But I don't think it's just about shows and museums. Some love the challenge of accurate detail, some like the competition, some like to 'get out there.'

Not to mention that my old coupe has so many farmer fixes I could never possibly afford to get it perfect.

But I can afford to enjoy driving it, and my girls can enjoy riding in it.

I personally have noticed how people gravitate to the drivers and tend to ignore the queens ! At a show last summer the MC announced " here come the dark clouds, all queens immediately report to your traile " ! Wayne

I have restored a Richard Petty Dodge race car that was entered into the Smithsonian Institute around 1974 or so and the Bill Elliott T-Bird that is in the Henry Ford Museum since the early '90's?. A recent Model A restoration is rumored to be headed to the Ford Museum at Gilmore in the near future, so a fair number of folks will get to see some of these attempts to preserve history, but at no point in time were any of these restored for any other purpose than to challenge my own abilities. Speaking only for myself, I just enjoy the challenge of climbing the mountain. The view from the higher elevations far exceeds the view from the valley and occasionally you can catch a glimpse of an eagle.

Far and away, the most difficult decision to make in any difficult task, is the one than requires you to gather up your testicles, put them a clear bag for others to comment on, then proceed to complete the task. Some days are difficult, but the personal rewards are indescribable.

Learning to breathe rarified air is quite hard, and most are afraid to try. The best breathers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting are Marco Tatharis, Gary Karr and Hunter Fanney, and a few others. If you have been afraid to apply the effort required to build a trailer queen, or are simply not interested, you only have a perception. These guys can offer you perspective!

Once more, this is only the thoughts of an old man!

Firstly, let me say that everyone is entitled to their opinion. My opinion may differ to the next guy and his will differ to mine. This does not make either of us right or wrong.
I believe that cars should be driven. They have wheels and an engine and were made to drive. Some say that to preserve history cars should be restored to a high points standard and as they were when they left the factory. My view is that things are only original once. The moment they are sold by the dealers they become subjected to normal wear and tear and sometime harsh abuse. If you want to see Ford history, go to the Ford Museum. I like to think that I am taking real history to the people on the street. That is cars as they were used in their day. Cars that are not perfect, complete with scratches, dents, bent spokes and worn upholstery. Cars that survived the great depression.

What will happen when all the cars are fully restored to fine points standard. How will spare parts suppliers survive with no more demand for parts because vehicles are no longer driven and subjected to normal wear and tear.

Synchro909, you and I know from firsthand experience the joys of long distance driving. We share the same passion. We enjoy the benefits that these cars offer. We are very fortunate to live in a country where we can enjoy these benefits. I just can't wait for the next big outing to Darwin for the next Model A Ford national meet. See you on the road.

Once they are restored to fine points standard and judged at a meet, many are then driven.

Great Googley Moogley! Why do so many in the hobby want to make it a us vs them. Enjoy whatever "cranks your frank" with your vehicle, it's ok. Drive it or trailer it. Trying to convince others that your way is the only way is a waste of time, imo.

Due to an accident last year I no longer have a trailer. The Model A survived and will be driven from now on.

Morning to Rock Hill Will. As organiser of the above mentioned tour into the hills I endorse your comments in your first post. I will add that our trips are based on " use and do not abuse" philosophy and I can assure others that our cars will still be around in many years to come. I must add that the "cut down" cars in the video are an important part of NewZealands history as it was very common in days gone by because of our isolation geographically and not being able to buy a ute/pickup to purchase an old car for a nominal price and modify it to your needs generally farm work. The owners of the above mentioned vehicles intend to keep them the way you have seen them and they are getting very favourable remarks for on.

The vehicle was at the Model A Days in Sharon, Wisconsin a few years ago. Most people were drawn to vehicles like this, or the so-called "trailer queens" (I am coming to detest that term). The ones in between were walked by as if they were just another old vehicle.

Good evening to you 'Wooden'.

I do get 'on a rant' sometimes and when posting like this, it's difficult to judge content of comment without being able to watch some ones face, smile, etc. I did not intend for it to sound like I preferred the 'finer' restorations, only that they had their place, especially for preserving history. I am really disappointed that I sold my Panel Truck so soon after restoring it. As I was completing it, I had many enjoyable evenings pondering the possibility of driving it around the United States on a 'perimeter tour'. I have been in each of the states other than N. Dakota, Alaska and Hawaii. I had visions of spending time with many of my friends as I completed the tour other than Hawaii. I like to drive long distances and it was only the thoughts about driving home thru the southern borders that tempered my enthusiasm to the point that I laid that plan aside.

If you own a Model A, it is my opinion that you should be able to do what ever you would like to do with it to provide enjoyment. I have many friends in the metal shaping community that are from your neck of the woods, and a couple of which are considering attending a metal shaping event that I am hosting in a couple of months.

BTW, I also have restored a driver pickup, a Tudor that is my current driver and am currently building an aluminum bodied speedster which formed the interest that has led me to meet so many international metal shaping friends.

I can understand the appreciation of a perfectly restored vehicle, but the joy it brings to the kids and grandkids riding in the rumble seat and the smiles we get when riding around town, lockport Illinois, far outweigh the idea of a trailer.

It's worth noting that some folks seem to assume everything is "either/or" meaning you can't do both. When one is a 'die hard' Model A guy it's not unusual to have more than one car to suit different needs. I can guarantee I've driven a Model A far more than 95% of the participants here. However I will admit I haven't hit the 100k miles mark yet as raising a family DID slow things down a bit in my case.

I've driven many types of terrain but must say I've never crossed a creek! I did have fun spinning donuts in the mud in Carson City, Nevada after a storm.

Different folks have different things that motivate them. Some have MANY!

It seems to me that there are more and more folks who think that their way is THE right way and others are wrong. For me, driving or trailering is fine depending on what YOU want to do with your vehicle. Actually I practice what Marco is talking about. My very early Phaeton, A495, is a trailer king. My '39 Ford Coupe is driving car.

Will, I totally agree that restoring to fine point is a way to assure that automotive history is preserved but I totally disagree that you are an "old" man. I WILL accept that you are older but the word "old" has bad connotations for me. It is an end of the road type term. A case in point, my dad was 91 years old when he agreed to reside in an assisted living place. As we walked around he said that there sure were a lot of old people there. His point was that most had accepted a finality that he would not. Almost to the end he planned on "escaping" and getting back to work. Will, your mind is vibrant and your spirit is the same. I've always admired those things about you. However, I would like you to remove the word "old" from your vocabulary when talking about yourself. Otherwise I may need to come down to South Carolina and we'll have to have a talk. Love ya, brother.

That was a great video. Another good reason not to restore... We have done a couple of
dirt road tours but the longest one was about 20 miles, It would be fun to do another.
When I was a teenager and before I restored my car we were driving it around with no fenders or hood on it and doing some 4wd jeep trails. A couple of times we sort of got
stuck, but just jumped out and lifted the rear end of the car over a bit and kept going,
went thru a few streams also, it was great.
