Default removing vent window glass

The 55 Shop Manual says to apply carbon tetrachloride to the glass seal and let set for several hours to loosen up the glass from the frame. Is there a common chemical that is readily available that will do the same thing?
Also , will that frame then slide out of the lower mounting hole so I can replace the rubber seal around the frame?
I did this procedure to my 54 Merc hardtop many years ago , kind of forgot the details on how I did this.
This car is a 55 Ford 2 door Ranch Wagon , the doors are same as 2 dr sedan.
Anybody done this job lately?
Thanks,
Steve

There is another long thread that talks about vent window glass replacement in this forum not long ago it seems.
You can probably find it if you use the search option.

As I recall, I sprayed gasket remover all around the seal/frame to loosen it up. Mine were so far gone it was not a big deal though.

The thin, chrome frame around the vent glass will "slide out" if that is what you are referring to here. Basically, there is a pivot set screw up top that needs to be removed first. Then it will come out pretty easily.

There is a nut on the bottom that has to be removed and then it will slide out of the frame. There is also a special washer that keeps the window from going to far when opened.

So I just sprayed the glass with JB-80 and let it run down the glass and soak into the channel. Let it set over night. Took a 6 inch block of 2x4 and set the edge on the bottom channel , gave it a few taps and it slipped right off. No broken glass or problems.
Did the same with the larger door glass to get it out of the lower channel , works great on it too. That JB-80 is good stuff for a lot of uses.
Thanks!
