Default Motometer vs radiator cap

Was wondering if there's a big difference between running a motometer or a radiator cap? I know the motometer gives some indication of the temperature, but from many of the posts I read on here they seem to have a problem sealing tightly. What do most people prefer and have the least amount of problems with?

I have no trouble with the original plain cap, and due to the condition of it I don't have to worry about theft.

I'll know when my car overheats by the steam.

I've had a repro motometer on mine for 11 years. Never any issues and the thermometer has indicated over heating a couple of times when I hadn't checked the water level.

I've got one of each. Had a repro quail on the coupe for many years. Looked good but was hard to read. I also had to make some seals out of rubber to make it fit well. After I replaced the radiator and no longer had overheating probs I didn't need the thermometer any more. Got a motometer as a gift and it looked nice so now that's been on there for about 10 years. I like it on the coupe and it works well, though the car doesn't overheat.
On the pickup a motometer just doesn't look right. The truck is plainer, more functional looking. And the thing doesn't overheat so the cap is best.

Does anyone know -or is anyone willing to tell - what thermometer is used in a motometer? I can't see buying a complete unit (@ $50.00+), if the thermometer tube is available for<$15.00.
