Yesterday, on our Triumph club drive, a member's car was T-boned by another car and the driver was killed and his wife is in serious condition. We know our old cars are not very sturdy, but feel the risk is worth it, but none of us had the victims' children's contact info for the police to use to notify them. We all resolved to add emergency contact numbers to our cell phones that don't require "unlocking." One other member had the kids' numbers, which was passed on to the police.

So sorry to hear that. Our club carries a "wallet" when on outings with everyone's contact info. Which reminds me we should update it as we have some new members.

Sad news indeed. Here, the police would take no longer than a heart beat to get a person's contact details from the registration number of the vehicle. It may take another heartbeat to trace family by breaking into the deceased phone and going through their contacts.
My son is a paramedic and there are times when they are called too late to save a person or all they can do is make the person comfortable while they wait for the family. They have a few "goto" places to quickly find contacts for the family. Locked phones do make that a little more difficult but they manage in 90% of cases. I'm sure the police would have more powers than any of us to trace the family.
All of that said, your idea is a good one.

We thought that, too, but the Maryland State Police contact asked for help and we thought that being proactive might help the hopefully far-off next time.

I am so sorry to hear this.

How does one go about putting emergency phone numbers on an iPhone that do not require unlocking? Maybe a low tech solution would be piece of paper under the cover with the phone numbers? That would not require that the cell phone be working after an accident.

One common scheme is to have a contact "ICE" on your cell phone. "In Case of Emergency".

On a general emergency preparedness note, arrange for a emergency contact clearing person... outside of the area you live in. In the event of a large scale (hurricane, earthquake, wildfire, etc) or personal disaster communication (phones, cell phones, internet etc) may be disrupted, or you may be overwhelmed with dealing with the emergency. A designated remote contact person can step in to keep friends and relatives updated as often you will want to, or only be able to, make occasional contact. You want the contact person out of the area you are in so (hopefully) they will not be caught up in the disaster.

I've never seen club rosters that asked for next of kin info.

In this state, nearly all of our vintage cars are on a Club Permit Scheme. It is basically a permit to drive an unregistered car legally on the road. It is much cheaper tan full registration but we are only allowed to use the car for a maximum of 90 days a year. To keep track of the days, we must fill in a log book prior to each run. One line of the log book, one day of your 90 used. The logbook has a sticker in the front with the name and address of the owner of the car.
I'd be amazed if police couldn't find our next door neighbour's contacts from that. Our neighbours all have our family contacts and we, theirs. I'm not familiar with the system over there but I do know that insurance and registration papers are kept in the car. Would your police be able to do the same thing from those?

Those documents don't have any family contact information on them in the US.

Thanks for the link to the video. I would have never guessed how to do that. I am still going to put contact info on a piece of paper and put it under the cover in case the phone is rendered inoperable or the person looking for the emergency numbers is not tech savy.

My wife and I have had "business cards" made for ourselves with our details on them. After this thread, I think I'll always carry one on which I have written on the back, contact numbers for "Son" and "Daughter". It will be in my wallet.
As an aside, the way the years are flying by, I will soon be able to add grandchildren to the contact list. Reality check!

Bruce, have you heard any news on the wife? I hope she is doing OK. I have been thinking about her, the driver who died and emergency contacts for members lately.

As I mentioned above in post #4, our club carries contact info in a zippered wallet. I will be bringing this up at the next meeting to bring us up to date. Below is a picture of the card I made up that we carry. Each member fill one out.

I keep a piece of paper labelled "I.C.E." in my wallet, with contact info (phone numbers) of who should be contacted. Hopefully never needed - but it's there just in case.
