Best steering box for an A
I see posts saying they use F1 box (1948 -52)and some using F100 (1953 - 56) What are the pros and cons of each; ease of mounting, connecting stock wiring, use of Model A steering wheel? Just bought a 1930 Coupe and want it to steer good.

If you're staying with the 4 cylinder, the F100 box is best. If you are going to a V8 flathead, then the F1 box works better for exhaust clearance.

Randy Gross makes some nice ones that bolt right in.

Re: Best steering box for an A
I just put a F100 box from Randy into my 29 Phaeton and I am very happy with it. Steering is easier and very very tight. With the 7 tooth I could not go over 35 without needing to check my shorts......with Randy's box I had her up to 62 and felt safe. Some frown on it as it's not stock but to me it looks like it belongs. For a show car I would say no but for a car that's going to be driven its a very nice and welcome addition. Also for people who have a few years on them it makes driving a little easier. This is not the reason I got the F100 box but I have a feeling this will be the reason I will be able to enjoy my Model A for as long as I can drive a car. I have no regrets and would never go back to what I had.

These are NOT the ultimate in steering boxes but usually adaquate for normal street use and far better than the original. There are F100 units available that are a direct bolt in but I prefer to do it myself and retain the self cancelling turn signal feature. |
