Default '37 Ford - Can you tell me what this is?

Can anyone tell me what this semi circular recess in the beading on the driver's side of the firewall was for in an original '37? I've never seen a car with anything mounted there. Thanks, Bill

There was a hole there if the car had an optional exhaust heater. There would be a pipe that ran from the exhaust heater to the inside of the cowl for your windshield defogger. So, your car when it was original had the optional exhaust heater system. At one point, someone had closed it up.

I think Ford put that there so you could locate the hole for the exhaust heater. My 37 has the same semi-circle and has never had an exhaust heater.

Isn't that on the wrong side for heater??
Anyway, if car is Canadian, Ford Canad supplied a lot of RHD cars to the Antipodes, South Africa, etc. and it might be a location intended for something on RHD cars.

Here's my old '38. You can see the heater/defroster plumbing. The driver's side, left-hand drive, got priority from the defroster. Heat came from a heat exchanger on the exhaust.

I smell a garbage truck engine! A 59AB in a 37 with 3:78 will run the interstate and go fast enough to kill you.

Thanks for the information. My car never had the whole cut, but I figured it was sort of "rough-in" prep for something. I understand from Barrry in Victoria, his doesn't have it, but it must have been a pretty common rough in I think. As far as the garbage truck engine..........yep, we all have our preferences, that is mine Bill
