Default 8BA to 1937 3-speed transmission adaptor

If anyone knows of or has a Ford adaptor to attach a 1937 3- speed transmission to an 8 BA I would appreciate the information. I checked with Speedway and they say that Ford made one but there is no aftermarket version. Any help is appreciated. 0405161249.jpg

1948-1952 Ford V8 trucks and 1949-1950 Mercury cars had a bell housing that will do what you want to do. Be sure to get the correct starter plate with it.

You are missing the stock bellhousing that bolts to the block. I looked on eBay and found three.

It is a steel stamped ring, should be easy to locate one. In the past there were also aftermarket alum. Ones.

This is the '49 / '50 Merc half bell and requisite starter plate. Find 'em on eBay. There's also a similar cast iron housing that came on '48-'50 pick-ups. DD

http://www.wilcap.com/flathead.html

These are the stock bellhousings used on the 1949-1953 Ford truck (cast iron) and the 1949-1953 Mercury (stamped steel). These "convert" the 8BA block to the 59A bolt pattern. The use of the correct starter plate is critical to the function of these bellhousings.

I have a couple of each type that I would be willing to let go cheap. Unfortunately, I am away from my shop for a few more weeks. If you can't find anything in the interim, get back to me.

Thank you for the information. One of the attached photos shows the bell housing that came on the engine. I will check ebay to see what is listed. I want to ensure that I get the correct one with the correct starter cover. Are they labeled in any way so I can tell? Thank you for all of the suggestions.

Here is a cast iron pick-up version on the 'Bay right now, although they can be found less expensively. DD

I don't see anyway that will sell for that price. The hogsheads were selling for $100 to $150, know way the adapter ring is worth that much. Haven't followed them, but I would think more like $50 to $75.

Purchase one from tubman, that way you know what your getting!! Also, if it was me, I would go for the stamped steel one. Easier to ship and handle.

If all else fails, call Ray Helgers, 401 636 4849, he has a building full of them, and knows what works with what. Can't beat Ray's knowledge, and the price is always very reasonable.

Expensive paint job. Think I paid $50 last year for a cast one with starter plate.

There is good information about how to tell the correct start plate, I believe its on the Wilcap site but I could be wrong. If I remember correctly the starter plate for the 1/2 bell has the starter mounting flange which is parallel to the rest of the plate and the one from a full bell housing has a starter mounting flange which is at a slight angle to the rest of the plate. I'm sure someone can explain it more clearly than I did.

Wilcap and VanPelt are both sites with a lot of good information on bellhousings and starter plates.

That eBay price isn't all that bad. We sell them for a bit more. Not that I'm trying to rip anyone off either. Those cast iron adapters have to be checked carefully for cracks. Many times you don't see the crack til you've spent the time cleaning the piece thoroughly. Plus, there's always more cast adapters than the matching starter plates. The value is in the pair.

I think the cast ones were for the 11 inch clutch originally but they will work for the smaller ones just fine. Definitely a truck part for sure. Some of the Mercury ones have a flange on the starter plate that bolts to the aft bottom edge of the oil pan but this can be removed if not needed. If you see one with this then you can tell it's from a Mercury car.
