Default early offy intake

Picked this up this weekend. Never seen one like it. What can you fellas tell me about it? The edge of the intake is 1/2 inch thick. Thanks Bill

I'm no flathead expert, but looks like someone shaved of the generator mount off and made a crankcase breather out of that area. Probably for a race car without a charging system ?

I agree with Sal. I don't have a manifold or catalog to compare it with, but that breather sure didn't come from Offenhauser like that, though the breather itself might have.

I disagree- it indeed did come like that. I have seen others.

I have one identical to it, including the breather. It's an early racing model.

Ya' learn something every day. Although I find a "racing model" with heat to be a bit odd. The way the breather is attached looks pretty professional. I think the cheesy blue paint affected my judgement.

Bill
That was Offy's answer to the Edelbrock super dual, They Made two versions, one was an inch higher, and is no longer made. This may bt that unit. I used one on the Bville engine converted to two 2GC's. Yes, I think someone installed a pan breather on the front. Good idea. Probably used an off set gen bracket.

99 percent sure the breather is original. Everything looks to perfect a job. I did a quick low pressure glass bead to clean up. From bottom of intake to the top of carb mount is 4-1/2 ". Same as my 8ba offy.

That's what confused me too. I agree that it's an early manifold for racing, since the experts chimed in, but why would it have the exhaust crossover to heat the manifold ? Unless it's plugged internally and Offy just modified a street manifold to make this one.

I have a photo of the Bville intake, I'll look for it. I still think someone just bolted it on.

It it doubtful to me that the front breather was 'factory original'. It would require additional machining steps that I don't think they'd like to do -- or they would have cast that area with the breather cavity and a boss on the outside. Now this is just a wild-ass guess/opinion - not based on any knowledge of any kind! (Like most opinions I guess )

But regardless of how it came to be . . . it is still cool!

I have somewhere an old Offy catalog that shows this intake in it. It is an original. Take a look how flat the front "nose" is. Later Offy have a different shape. There isn't enough meat on a later one to machine it down for a breather. I'll try to find that catalog in my stash.

It would be nice to see pics of others like this for comparison.
