Default Early 28 center bumper emblem

I have been watching an auction on eBay for a supposedly NOS early 28 center bumper emblem. The seller ended it today at about $71 and relisted it as a "Buy It Now" for $250 - WOW! After looking at it carefully, I believe it is an early repro. The emblem looks nice, but I don't believe it is a Ford made emblem. The threads are too long, the nut is to small across the flats (mine is 9/16"), the backing plate appear to be a little too long and the back of the emblem doesn't look as rounded like my three original emblems. I am posting some pictures of one of my emblems below. The link to the eBay listing is below. Any opinions?

The ebay one looks more like the one Mark posted. I'd question the NOS. The back clamp looks like it's had a washer against it.

It will be interesting to see if is sell for anything close to $250 - I doubt it. Early bumper emblems are rare, but not $250 rare in my opinion. Why is it painted black instead of Ford blue like all the other emblems I have seen? It can't be a Canadian emblem, as it doesn't have Made In Canada on it, which may have been painted black but Ford.

Rusty, remember the clamp was a carry over from the model T as I understand. The clamp appears to be NOS. Jim

Jim,
Were the model T emblems painted black? Maybe they were.

I believe the original clamp was 3 separate pieces:
* body = black paint (pressed vs.cast?)
* bolt = black paint
* face = plated & black (early) or blue (later) paint; crimped onto body

I don’t have the early (‘made in USA’) drawing but assume it to be similar.

Sorry, dont recall my source of the 'opened' clamp so i cant give proper credit where due.

BTW: Would like a copy of earliest style drawing

I have a NOS Clamp on my A1276, it is painted Black in the center. By the time the January 1, 1928 " Dealers Parts Price List" was issued it does not say "same as T part number" as the new clamp was painted Blue in the center, so the T clamps with Black center must have been used up ?

Ron

My NOS Center Bumper Clamp came from my Uncle's barn in Stockton, CA; in 1933 my uncle bought all the parts, bins, etc., from the Ford Dealership in Sonora, CA when the dealership went out of business; he hauled everything to his ranch in Stockton using his 1929 AA Truck, which he bought new in Stockton. You just can not believe the things that cam out of that dealership, such as new T tops complete, T brass radiators, running board shields T and A,
new Quail radiator caps, 28-29 hood sills, Lincoln Polish, new late 31 owners manuals, etc. This was in the early 60's, I only had a 31 Deluxe Coupe at that time and not into the very early A's . My uncle told me to take anything I wanted, I told him I only wanted thing I could use on my coupe. I did finally take the early T center bumper clamp never realizing I would have a need for it many years later.

Looking at the script font it is nothing like Charles example. The script is closer to the later drawing without the made in usa. the back does not appear to be crimped like the drawing.

i found an early 28 MADE IN USA bumper clamp a few years back, It was pretty beat up so i sent it to a metal worker to get restored. I got a call back from him and said it was made of stainless steel but it WAS made from the original Dies. It is not a early or cheap reproduction. it cleaned up really good and is on my 28 AA

It appears the one on eBay had been mis aligned when the back was stamped and possibly an attempt to straighten happened over the years. May be the reason it wasn't used if nos and why the cover doesn't appear as crimped.

I agree with Steve, Mark's emblem doesn't have the crispness of the ones Ford made. The script lettering is too thick.

Hi Bick:

The Canadian one is a tough one. I saw one posted on E-bay about 6 months ago and it sold for $575.00 US.

I have a original that is Blue in the center area, it is complete with backing plate and nut, ready to be bolted on. I know this should be posted in the swap meet section but in view this post is about the early Center Bumper Clamp thought it might be ok to post it here.

Make me an offer, send PM.

Went to a junk yard this week-end, guy had bought out the former owner, he found boxes of model A parts, got a center emblem for less then $5, looks like new.
Also found the dome light and frame for my '31 fordor...$10.
He had one rear bumper, looked like new, no sign of the other three...dang it.
Got two old tire pumps, $10 each, one says "US ORD"

I found the center bumper clamp to the left at the Chicago swap yesterday. The one on the right I have had for some time. Both are clad. The one on the left has a quarter inch stud, and the one to the right has a 5/16" stud. JS sez center bumper clamps have a 5/16" stud, so the left clamp is not original, right? Soooo.... is the clamp to the right an original? How does one distinguish the difference between an original clamp and a repro? Thanks

Thanks Tom. The one on the right photo IS brass clad. Some of the plating is worn off and there is brass underneath. And here all this time I thought it was a repro! Now I know. Thanks again, mike
