Default Manifold gasket

I installed a brand new intake and exhaust manifold. I checked it with a metal yard stick which it showed perfectly even. I put on a one piece silver gasket, but after a club meet today it is leaking again. Should I take out the rings that I put in and would it be better if I used a copper gasket. Has anyone ever put on two gaskets???? What would you guys suggest.

i always use the copper gasket and the rings when installing new manifolds. new studs, nuts and beveled washers. tighten from inside to out.

Tom,

If the manifolds have been surfaced a couple of times the rings may be spacing the manifolds out and causing a problem.

Did you check the block for flat?

Intake and exhaust manifolfds should be bolted together and machined together for flatness. As mentioned, the exhaust rings could be too long but can be ground down and dry tested to make sure the manifolds sit flush on the block before installing the gasket.

Agree with Ed, I have not used rings in my A's for a very long time. I do not reuse the copper gaskets if I have the manifold off. Gar Williams

Whenever I use metal clad gaskets (copper steel whatever) I always spray them with Copper Cote gasket sealer. I personally use the gland rings but I always make sure they have clearance, I always retighten a couple of times after a good warm through also. Good luck Clyde

On my Cabriolet after installing a rebuilt B motor I couldn't get the gland rings installed & it leaked in one area. I installed two gaskets this was four yrs. & several thousand miles ago & it's been fine with no leaks.

I don't bolt them together for surfacing, I leave the bolts loose when installing the manifolds, shim between them, and only tighten the 2 bolts enough to compress the washer ---perhaps with todays fuel less heat is needed to vaporize the fuel and some space between the manifolds can help with the dreaded vapor lock problem ---my car has resisted problems with the sort of gasoline sold today

I also resist removing metal from any original part by surfacing --it's hard to put back later---what happens when you have a several time surfaced intake and you get a new ex manifold----do you cut down the new one to match the original intake?

It has worked for me, I used the copper gaskets I had,no sealer, and 3 gland rings that would fit, it's been 25 years, my manifold is cracked now, but I don't want to disturb it until the 25 year old muffler falls off, I think I will force in some furnace cement into the crack

The gaskets were used when i put them on ---the new ones that I had used kept failing
