Default no spark at plugs

I started my Model A and it quit running. I had no spark at plug. I removed cap and had spark at points. If I open and close points by turning rotor there is no spark from high tension coil wire to grd. If I use a screw driver to open and close points there is spark at coil wire. It seams like the current in not going through the points. I cleaned them. Iam not explaining this right but can some one give me a idea what is wrong
Thank you.

Check your point gap. It may have closed up and is not opening by the distributer cam but does open with the screw driver.

Old Guy
I think your problem is your rotor or distributer body. Can you measure 25 thousands between rotor point and body point?

How are you trying to use the rotor to open/close the points ?

It shouldn't make any difference how the points are opened/closed. As long as the circuit to ground can be made and broken, the coil field should build and collapse.

Is your coil wire copper strand and not noise suppression carbon. Use copper.

if there is a spark at the points they are making contact. unless your contacting them with the screwdriver. i would look at the coil. the spark flows from points to coil then back to dizzy then through the rotor to the plug.

I dont think it is being grounded through the points I have to use the screwdriver on the movable point arm to the base plate and than it will make the coil spark. With the points closed I dont think I have a circuit to ground.

The stationary point is the ground point. If it sparks between the movable point to the base plate, then it has to spark between the moveable point and the stationary point. If it does not spark in real operation, either your points are always closed, or open so far that they never close. Another thing I have heard of is lubricating the shaft with so much excess grease that the points get greased up and don't conduct when closed.

It started and ran, then you advanced the timing lever and it quit? Are you losing the ground from the upper plate to the distributor? All original? If it has been sitting awhile rust buildup in the distributor groove won't conduct electricity
in the movable plate to distributor groove.

Just here are you touching the screw driver to make the ground to produce the spark ?

If touching the upper plate allows for a spark, I'd start with the point hold down to the upper plate.

If you have touch the distributor housing to get a spark, then I'd suspect the upper to lower wire. It is a special very fine strand wire. The connectors can also be the cause of an unwanted ground, make sure they are in proper location.
