Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
Hello,
I recently decided to add a right side rear tail light on my 1931 4-dr standard Phaeton for safety reasons. Since I wanted the left to match the right I purchased a new left side bracket at the same time. Unfortunately the left side reproduction bracket does not come close to matching the original that was on the car. In the picture I have posted below you can see that the "tunnel" of the repro part on the left is much lower relative to the top bolt hole and this creates a problem because the center hole (in the fender) for the tail light wires will be 3/4 blocked. I would prefer not to move or enlarge this center hole. I am also not impressed with the quality of these repro parts. So my question to you all is this, does anyone sell a left side tail light bracket that is closer in design and quality to the original that also sells a matching right side bracket? I would prefer stainless steel but at this point gloss black would be just fine also. Thanks for your help Dave |

Any shows or swap meet coming up in your area soon? Maybe you could find an original and make it work on your car.

Re: Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
The left side bracket (black one on the right in picture) is original and is usable, the problem is finding a matching original right side bracket here in the U.S. since I believe they would only have been on cars that were originally RHD. That is what sent me done the reproduction parts path. Unfortunately some repro parts are not that close to original in design or quality.

Re: Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
I went through the same thing a few years ago. The right side didn't come close to having the correct angle so I just put it on the shelf. I would like to find an original RH tail light also. I just returned from Gettysburg and I noticed a lot of RH taillights that didn't look correct.

Re: Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
I also bought a repro right light that was at wrong angle. I made pie cuts in the stand, welded and it now looks correct. Not much out there to just bolt on. The story of many repro parts.

Re: Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
I do not believe that Ford made a right side tail light bracket.
On both of my Model As, I assembled the right side tail light and measured to the ground at the tea cup to make sure the RH light is at the same height as the stock left side light. Also match the distance from the body to get the horizontal position to match. Then mark and drill the fender attachment holes. The next problem is the lens colors may be significantly different.

Re: Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
Did foreign countries that had RHD Model A's have the one tail light bracket on the right fender or did they also have just the one on the left side like the U.S.A? If Ford did make a right side bracket for those countries I can reach out to Model A clubs in those countries to see if any original right hand tail light brackets are available for sale. I called Bert's and they only had original left side brackets.
Thanks Dave |

Re: Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
I took original left one and sliced and sectioned it-- I tacked it together on the car so I could make them matching

Re: Right side rear tail light mounting bracket question
Slice and dice on repo is the answer
Right hand bracket was standard on all (USA) 180a I think. |
