Default '36 Plug wire diagram correct?

When I use the orientation shown in the diagram, the distributor cap won't fit into the the distributor housing unless I rotate the cap 180° so that notch fits in the groove in the distributor body. My question is as long as I have the correct wires going to the corresponding numbered terminals in the plug wire cap it will be correct?

There are 2 different inside caps with the locator tabs at 90 degrees to each other! I do not know if that might be the issue or problem. Hope this helps. kerk

The inner (and outer) caps can go on either side. They both have two sets of numbers and can only go in one way.If you're hooking up the right (passenger side) wires, use terminals marked 1,2,3 and 4. Left side, use 5,6,7 and 8.The cylinders from front to back on the passenger side are 1,2,3 and 4.The cylinders on the drivers side from front to back are 5,6,7 and 8.
I ran into the same problem with a similar diagram and soon realized that I was looking at the wrong side of the cap in the illustration.
