Default Mystery "cup" in bottom of oil pan????

This oil pan is vintage, 1936. What is the "cup" for that is welded to the bottom of the pan?

That cup is a sort of shallow baffle that goes around the tip of a pickup pipe from a first-generation flathead oil pump. Pretty sure pan is earlier than '36!

Actually, the pan is vintage 1933-34. The cup is where the pickup tube for the oil pump fits and helps ensure that the pump does not suck air when the oil level is low and the vehicle is operated on steep hills.

Ok, thanks guys for the info. I sort of miss-stated. The engine I have is vingage '36 and this is the pan I removed from it.
Earlier pan seems corrert. That's why there are the indents on the sides of the oil pan to support the dipper tray for the rods.

Not a dipper tray. Rods were all pressurized. If engine is 1936, it will have an open hole at right front pan surface where the vent is...a '35-up pan has an extra piece to cover and complete the vent, absent on the earlier pan. If pan fits it and there isn't a gap there, engine is pre-35.
