Default Oil Pan Storage

I have an oil pan that was part an engine I was putting together which I had sandblasted and then painted the outside. The pan was in OK shape but had some pits from rust in the sub pan. At a swap meet I found a much nicer pan that I used on the engine so I have the spare pan with bare metal that I know is going to rust soon. What should I treat this with to store it? I thought about a coat of oil but I figured that wouldn't last and would just attract dirt.

Use LPS rust inhibitor. There are several different kinds of LPS, make sure you get the rust inhibitor. It will keep the metal perfect for years, even in a damp environment.

There's probably something a bit more refined than this, but I've used wheel bearing grease to protect bare metal I did not intend to paint. May be good for the inside of your pan.

Good luck!

Check your dipper tray for rusted-through pits by holding it up to sunlight.

Grease works for me. Don't wrap it in paper, or the mice will thank you. A plastic bag will keep it clean.
