Default Water pump leather cover yes/no

So after every time I grease the water pump shaft the fan blows back little pieces of grease all over the place. I'm not crazy about the looks of the water pump leather cover but I assume its a good fix for this. What's your opinion? Do you use one?

I use them on all my A's for the exact reason you suggested. I don't particularly like the look but I like cleaning the mess up even less. Wayne

I think they look NIFTY, I have a GREEN one, that I will put on my "LEAKLESS" pump. It reminds me of the "OLD DAYS"!

I like them - keep things cleaner under the hood. Very easy to remove for a show.

AAAH, GREEN, the color of MONEY thet I DON'T HAVE,
Reminds me of the BLINDERS Grandpa had on Ol' Blue, a cantankerous old Mule! Thet DUDE could pull a Model A, BACKWARDS & start it in REVERSE, EVEN! BUT, Grandpa hed to WHIP him into submission, in the corner of the lot, just to get the harness on him-----"Why don't you sell that blamed mule"?---"Cuz he kin PULL more than ANY 2 mules hooked together"
I love "leakless" water pumps, then I don't always have to clean the CRUD from that exposed Castle Nut thet holds the front main bearing. I used to clean it, spray it with Pledge Dusting Wax & next time, it cleaned EASILY! (am I paranoid, "YES")

Sounds more like a time for a rebuild but the cover will keep things cleaner.

So I got my boot and put it on the other day and it looks fine. Today I took the car out, probably put 15 miles on her. I had cleaned up all the spattered grease prior to the drive. I come home and there is spattered grease everywhere again. All under the front half of the hood area. Whats up with that?

Such is the advantage of having Henry's favorite color.

It's called "rust proofing".

Thanks for the humor but I like to keep my engine shiney and clean. Today I took off the water pump leather assuming it would be all covered with grease underneath but it was shinny clean, not one spatter of grease, I can't see where the grease is coming from but it surly is being distributed by the fan.

I have a water pump cover I bought years ago,it is made of stainless and it has a half clamp affair that snaps over the packing nut to hold it to the pump.

How about the dirt/oil on the underside of the hood coming from the oil cap breather?

I use one of those after market flexable extension tubes - works great

I am only mentioning this because you are picky about your engine appearance and I have an easy solution. Your head nuts and the bolts fastening the water outlet should not be painted Ford engine green. Eastwood (available through Amazon) sells spray cans that will duplicate the correct look without disassembly.

Use the silver cad on the head nuts and the zinc phosphate on the water outlet bolts. If you want to go all OCD like me, spray some zinc phosphate in the cap and use a small brush to apply it to the top of the the studs inside the head nuts.

Is there any sign of grease being slung off the rear side of the pulley?

Tom, I don't see any grease on the rear side of the pulley, and it is not oil as someone mentioned. Its so bad it spatters out the hood louvers onto the fenders making a real mess.

If it's grease and not oil or antifreeze, then it has to be coming from the water pump having too much grease. I only gave my front bearing a small pump of grease each 500 miles, and in 10 years I gave the rear bushing maybe 3 small pumps of grease. I never had a mess, nor a leak until I ran the vinegar for 30 days, then I had a real mess all over the hood and engine.

Okay, after cleaning the engine and under the hood again I think I figured it out. First yes I pumped too much grease into the two water pump fittings. And as some one asked is it coming out behind the back of the pulley - answer yes. It was hard to pin point but I do think that is the case. I guess its a mater of the excess grease dissipating over time now - thanks
