Default oil tray holes

the oil tray in the rebuilt engine I'm about to start for the first time has several quarter size holes in it. I read somewhere that was done to reduce oil comsumtion. Is that true and ok?

It was done to relieve some of the oil coming out of the filler tube. The holes range from 4 dime size holes to 5 holes the size of silver dollars. The holes will ONLY be in the flat of the tray, NOT in the troughs.

If these holes are in the Oil Puddle/trough areas do not run the engine. If your running a stock Model A Splash lubed set up don't use that tray. The purpose of the tray is to hold Oil (Puddles) for the rods to dip into and scoop up the oil for the bearings. If you have quarter size holes you will not have any oil puddle for the rods to dip into. You'll burn up the rod bearings asap. Unless you have a Pressurized system you cannot use that tray.
