Default 3 speed removal in a 1948 f1

I have read that the transmissions are to be removed from the top. I have looked underneath and I swear there isn't enough room to move the rear of the transmission back enough for the input shaft at the front to clear the pressure plate and come straight up. The cross member seems to be in the way. Who has actually done this?
