Default Tuning a pair of 94s

Where should I start with trying to fine tune a pair of 94s on my 53 engine, I think it is an 8ba?

Your opening up a can of worms you know that. Even tuned correctly it will not run right with the stock dist.It should be changed to a modified Chevy unit. Call or get hold of Charlie,NY on here .He can fill you in on all the fixes. 1-716-662-9159

Ken is right on the money here, even after the Distributor change, you find putzing with the idle jets a waste of time. Run each carb indeoendly n the engine. It would be nice if you had an AF meter to determinr the fuel settings of the main jets. Tune carbs for best vac at Idle and run em.

Jump over to the hamb board site, there is a dual carb forum, covering the good and bad ways to get two carbs to run on aflathead....

It's called the Holley 94 social group , most info on the subject I have seen. I use this forum quite a bit .........

Go lower in jet size like around .046 and install 4.5 # power valves if you can find them, there out of production in the style that fit w/no modifications. I may have some 4.5 left but not sure/ 5.5 would possibly work which i have. Good luck. ken ct. Thats why i said your opening a can of worms just to get the bragging rites of a 2x2. LOL

Thomas,
Everyones' answers are correct in my humble opinion. '52 Henry and I
build a lot of these 2x2 setups. My approach parallels Ken and Ron.
I like to start with 47 jets and 3.5 - 5.5 power valves. I'd rather be a bit rich
than too lean to start with. I will once again climb upon my orange crate and mention
that in my experience the power valves and bowl should be machined to insure good
flat gasket faces to preclude any vacuum leaks. Each carb after assembly should be
tested and adjusted separately per what Ron said.
Unlike Strombergs the 94 carbs seem to be unusually sensitive to vac
leaks between throttle shafts and their bores in the base. Since you are looking
at 2x2's you'll need extended throttle shaft which can be purchased oversize
from SPEEDWAY. The bases can be line reamed and this usually takes care of the
vac leak at the throttle shaft.
The extended shafts are needed to tie the 2 carbs together on the
LH side. It's not a good idea to attempt tieing the carbs together and actuating
them from the RH side because the linkage droops and will drive you nuts trying
to achieve consistent adjustment.
I certainly recommend the sbc converted dist in place of the FORD
Loadamatic, especially in this application, your wallet will too because of the increase in mpg.

I would go with Charlie only because he also does the dist deal. But 52 Henry is also good on the carb setups. Your choice either is more than competent to fix you up.ken ct.

Once you have both carbs set up with the same jets and PV you want to use, screw out the idle adjustment and then screw then in until both carbs have approx the same setting and the throttle plates are open identically(lets say about 3/4 turn from full closed). Then install the carbs with the idle mixture adjustment about 1 to 1 1/2 turn out on all four. Connect linkage (suggest NOT to use progressive on only two carbs) start car and get it warm. Connect vacuum gauge, set all four idle mixture adjustments for highest vacuum about 1/4 turn rich from smoothest idle. Then using a "synchronizer" (there are several types) adjust the idle speed adjustment on the one with the lowest reading until it matches the other carb. The synchronizer measures the air flow through the carb. setting both to the same setting results in both working identically as long as both carbs have the same jets and PV. If the idle is a bit too high or low adjust both carbs idle so you get the idle RPM desired. Recheck the idle mixture adjustments, the synchronizer and you should be ready to go.

I can vouch for the quality of Charlie's converted distributors. I have several and they are top notch.
