sleeved flatheads?
Anyone know what years of Ford V8's came from the factory with sleeves? In all the bullsh-t that goes on hear, I never see any mention of it.LOL

First started in very late (Approx. early Dec.) 38. This would be 39 production and continued. They were only used when needed so not every engine had them. The blocks were stamped, near the intake manifold, to identify either HS, S or SL.

I have 39 & 40 v8/60,s with sleeves & 3 1/16 & 3 3/16 factory thin sleeves

I'm pretty sure that the tin can sleeves became obsolete sometime just before or during the WWII era. I don't remember any being mentioned in the USA production 59A era.
I always felt they were a good idea but FoMoCo only used them when they had to for one reason or another. |

I have a 39 merc. engine in my 37 trk it has 3 3/16 sleeves I used tractor sleeves when I rebuilt the engine same sleeves. good strong motor runs like new

I guess they had some in 39 but I've never seen one. I've built a lot 40-41-42 with the tin can sleeves .040 - I've built a lot of 8N-9N tractor engines, some have .040 sleeves and some have .090 sleeves. The flatheads with the .040 sleeves make a good engine by removing the sleeves and boreing another .045 to 3-3/16 and using std. 8BA pistons, and using the A heads. You can really feel the low end torque in the seat of the pants. Walt

No Chuck, I've never seen one worn out that bad. That engine must of run in the dust bowl with no air cleaner. A friend of mine had one of those engines built in an auto machine shop that wasn't used to building flatheads. They didn't remove the sleeves and started boring the engine. Instead of chips coming down from the boring bar there was a steel string coming out. They finished boring it in a Sunnen CK-10 cyl. hone .030 The sleeves are only .040 wall so now there only .025 walls. But as far as I know the engine is still running. Walt

I knew I shound'a used the B word! I have been thrown off the Hamb twice, probably living on borrowed tine hear also. I think this is a great forum, nobody else to talk to about flatheads. most my old mechanic friends are in that big junk-yard in the sky. sorry if I offended anyone, I will keep it sanitary from now on.Hnery
