Flathead Friday. Crank. Rods. Bearings. How bad are they?
Part 12 of the crusty flatty series is up on YouTube.
After last weeks mid project crisis I take stock of the other parts that need to be serviceable to make the motor run. I examine the crank, rods and bearings. Lets see just how bad they are, and if they will clean up enough to at least run. Thanks for following along and joining me tinkering in the garage. Mart. https://youtu.be/Lm3wi-aFniY |

I applaud your efforts, you could use a parts washer. Mark

Looking good. I use allot of used bearings In my build to achieve the correct clearance. I do this with a bore gauge, however,Plastic gauge works quite well. I'm sure they have something like this in the UK.
AS for the flothing rod bearings. this is done by measuring the thickness of the bearing and the ID of the ros and the OD of the crank. for your application, I'd like to see no more than .003" on the mains and .0045" on the rods. That's .0025 on the crank ans .002 on the rods. 10/30 oil and 40 lbs of pressure and the engine will turn 5k all day. |

Hey Mart, I'm sure that engine will run, but I would surely clean it up a lot better - or all the crap that is surely inside the crankshaft (and the block) will be pushed through the bearings and will ruin all of them.
Get it clean, use the bearings you have . . . put new rings in it, do the valves and I'm sure it will run really well - for a LONG time! Thanks for the videos . . . I enjoy them! And do get a parts washer - especially if you're going to be working on these old bit of iron. They're really not too expensive and would help you in these efforts - a BUNCH! |

I really get a kick out of the videos. They remind me of all the good times that I have had working on Model A and V-8 engines. Looking forward to the next video. Ray

I would really consider using that bottom end as is. Clean up the cylinders with a ball hone if they are not to badly tapered. Put new rings in and you should have a decent runner.
