Axle Nut source
Looking for a source of hardened axle nuts for a 1940 rear axle. I was installing the rear driver's side hub when I went to torque the axle nut to 200 ft/lbs. the nut stripped. I only got to 175 ft/lbs when the nut began to turn. These are brand new nuts from one of the vendors many of us use. When I purchased them I asked if they could take 200 ft/lbs of torque and was told that they hadn't received any complaints and the manufacturer of the nuts supplied most of the well-known early ford parts vendors.
This picture shows the nut after letting go. The next picture shows the axle threads after running a 5/8-18 die over the threads. I tried the other new nut and this one never made it past 150 ft/lbs. I know I can't be the only one who has come across this problem so if any of you have a good source for quality axle nuts please let me know. By the way 200-220 ft/lbs is the recommended torque value for this axle. Thanks |

Re: Axle Nut source
I had issues with most suppliers reproduction nuts stripping. Third Gen Auto was the solution. I also picked up a compression repair nut for my emergency kit from them too.

Third Gen is the only source for a full line of "correct" hardware and fasteners for your early Ford. He even has Model A hardware. Third Gen is at Hershey this week. They will be back in the shop next week. |

Re: Axle Nut source
Buy a hard high nut and drill it for the pin.
