Default Pilot bearing journal diameter

What is the range of dimension for the main drive shaft pilot bearing journal? It's for a later transmission if that makes a difference.

The diameter of the hole for the 40 mm pilot bearing in the flywheel is 1.5738/1.5743 inches.

You can buy a pilot bearing with a slightly smaller ID. then, assuming your input shaft is worn, it can be turned down and reused. Assuming the gears are good.

The transmission shaft should not turn in the pilot bearing, so the fit needs to be 0.001 to 0.003" clearance in my opinion. I recently restored a worn journal on a transmission shaft with JB Weld. After curing, I abraded the JB Weld to a diameter that was a snug fit into the pilot bearing. I have 100 miles on this fix, and so far it is working (no clutch chatter).

Seems if I remember correctly a generator bearing is the same. In case you have one hanging around.

The input shaft does turn in the pilot bearing anytime the clutch is depressed, otherwise you can't get it in gear.

That was ny first thought also but I think that Bob is correct in the close fit because it is a bearing not a bushing. So the rotational speed differences are made up in the bearing

IIRC, the originals were a bronze bushing, so the shaft would have to have been able to turn:

There was a person at the Portland Oregon swap selling re-machined shaft journal to fit a MM inside diameter bearing. FYI the original pilot bearing was/is used in many applications and easy to source. It was the same in my '66 mustang 6 cyl, and old Ferguson tractor.

An input shaft that is loose in the pilot bearing can and will cause your transmission to walk out of gear. It should be a machine fit, that is, no slop between the input shaft and the inner pilot bearing race...

The originals were ball bearings.
The front generator bearing is the same.
6203 2rs is a replacement number
