Default Engine Mount Bolts sheared off

A friend has a 29 Sport Coupe , noticed what seemed like clutch judder ,He looked under the car and found the 2 bolts that connect the engine mount to the Flywheel housing had there heads broken off.

This is a new one on me even after 45 years of Model A 's ownership. I told him to have a good look at the Flywheel housing and the other motor mounts which are the original type, He doesn't go over rough dirt roads but drives about 4,000 miles a year in the car .

Has anyone else have any experience of this ?

Were the bolt heads found? If so, was there safety wire on them? Was the other side safety wired or lock washered? Sounds like loose bolts.

Were they original "Ford" bolts or current reproductions? The information may hold the answer.

It's a "Restored Car "so I imagine they are the reproduction bolts,

I will have to ask him if the other side has lock washers or safety wired as original.
That's a good point, Henry didn't safety wire things for no reason!!

I don't think he found the heads

It would seem he has an undue amount of vibration for the heads to break off. Loosening is one thing, shearing heads is another

So - why were they lose? The key may be on the other side.

I think the A's used around here were used pretty much to death.Sheared engine mount bolts are a common thing for me to find on local cars. Also, the flywheel housing usually has chunks broken out of them if the bolts are sheared. The lip that rests on top of the motor mount is sometimes worn thin too.I've seen the lower frame rail worn completely through from the motor mounts riding there.

It looks like poor quality repo bolts were the cause of this problem ,
He checked the other side and no provision for the safety wire in the heads .

There are often a few surprises when you buy a restored car!!

Thanks everyone for your input on this
