Default Thoughts on heater hose hookups

Would there be any issue with connecting the 2 heater hoses directly to either head instead of one hose to the right head and the other down to the lower radiator hose via fitting? I am guessing that flow might be an issue but I would like to know what you think.

thanks.

Flow in the engine is from bottom to top. The 37 and later engines with water pumps in the block, push coolant into the block down low and create the flow required to push flow into the heater core feed hose. The heater core exit should go back to a lower level before the pump inlet where it will re-inter the water pump and the process starts over. If both hoses come off the head, there will be no flow.

What if one hose comes off the left head and one from the right? I suppose that won't work either due to the top to bottom flow correct?

With one on each head you arenīt even in the same flowloop from the waterpump so wonīt work.
What are you trying to gain/avoid if i may ask ?

I wonder why you ask? Our 46 pumps out enough hot air thru the water heater to keep our 4 door plenty warm in cold weather drives.

The later water pumps in the 8BA era have a boss for a hose nipple just for the heater core return line. That made life easier.

So I guess the best setup is heater-inlet to head. And heater-outlet to lower radiator. Both on the same side of the block? Jack E/NJ

That's how they work, any other arrangement would have very little to no flow. There is something else at play here. The heater core is a mini-radiator and the flow out of the core has to return to a block inlet prior to the water pump to pass back through the block to again gather heat from the block.

Thanks guys, I knew the answer but just in case I wanted to ask. I have not hooked my hoses up yet and thought it would be easier to do it from the heads rather than mess with the lower radiator hoses.

thanks.
