My 42 Merc Engine - Complete and Ready to Drop In!

First of all, a big THANKS to those who have helped me with some of my goofy questions related to 32 Fords (as I'm new to them - and the little details are important).

Well, after two years of screwing around to get this engine done - it is going into the 32 Cab chassis today (after it warms up a bit). I've done a ton of posting about all the build details on the HAMB - so if you're interested, there are a ton of pictures and a LOT of documentation. My goal was to capture everything I "think" I know, or am experimenting with - to pass it on to others.

Here is the completed engine . . . hope to fire it later today or tomorrow. I love starting new engines - kind of like being a kid again. There is the anticipation, the nervousness (is everything right???), and the excitement of hitting the starter button. Then there is the 'open headers' part.

It is a mess at the moment - this engine project just sort of took it over! Can't wait to put all the crap away and find my floor once again.

Looks great !! Ready for that 32 ! I have the same setup in my 32, good times for sure. I have been looking for a 90 deg distributor drive to do what you did for the ignition. They are hard to find ???? Congrats on time well spent, it shows in the details !!!

That appears to be the same color I was using on my current block! Looks like the block was drilled for the 95% filter setup and plugged, your running the bypass filter, correct?

That is one clean engine. I am very jealous. Keep us posted on that 100% full flow oil system. I saw it before and it looks like a really good simple kit.

I'm running a 100% full-flow system. The oil pump is modified to take ALL of the oil out of the top of it - then a hard line flows out the side of the pan, through my modified filter setup and then into the oil galleys at the back of the block.

I really don't get the '95%' filtration system claim . . . to me, these engines have three main bearings and when the rear isn't being filtered then it is a 66% full-flow to me.

I wanted all of my oil to go through a filter - so I opted for this approach.

Yes, kind of . . . this is a 'Vertex' magneto - which is the first company to take over the Scintilla mag production in the states. It is exactly the same as a Scintilla version - other then where it is manufactured and it has a black cap, not an original brown one.

I've always been a fan of magnetos - especially on these old 6 volt systems. Once you get them started, the mag takes it from there. I used to run Harmon Collins mags (beautiful creations!), the only problem is that they do not have any advance, so you have to lock-down the mag at whatever total degrees you want. This is a bit hard on starters - especially 6-volt ones.
