With the wire attached to the solenoid, it kicked over, started then died.
No spark at plugs again.

That is strange, it had to have a spark to start up. You have tried different coils, so one would assume that the issue has to be something in the distributor that is intermittent.

Note: don't leave the jumper attached when the engine is not running. It is easy to burn up a coil or the points.

It still could be the ground. I am having a devilish time with my 39. It exhibits similar symptoms to yours. I am convinced that my problem is the ground. Nice coupe, btw. You need to have that to drive around in!

I got skip to test the coil, condenser and distributor. They all check out.
I’ve gotten tied up with some other issues and I have yet to get back to it.

Update.
I sent my coil, condenser and distributor to skip.
He had it back to me within one week.
I finally got around to installing it today and it fired up like the day it rolled off the show room floor.
