Default '57 Thunderbird Fordomatic Tailshaft

Is it possible to slide back the tailshaft to replace a leaky gasket without pulling it from the car? Like most of my problems, this one was self inflicted

If you didn’t get an answer somewhere else, try over at yblocksforever. If you’re not signed up, contact Ted Eaton at eatonbalancing.com or [email protected]. To keep the spammers out he needs to sign you in. Not a big deal to do.

Somewhere I read an article about removing a Fordo in the car, maybe in a bird. Might have been there. Not a pretty job given how tight a bird tunnel is.

Well, here's the thing on a BIRD. It is easier (maybe) to remove the engine and trans as an assembly.

I have read accounts of sliding the tail-shaft housing back enough to then remove the bell/case - EDIT - without having to remove the engine/trans as an assembly..

I am a$$-u-me(ing) you mean the tail-shaft to main housing paper gasket?

Complicated by the fact that the transmission cross-member in a '57 Bird is welded in place, unlike the ones in earlier Birds that are bolted in and removable.

If you know somebody in your area that belonged to Classic Thunderbird Club International and has that club's old magazines, this index shows three articles on removing the transmission without removing the engine. It would involve removing the tail-shaft housing. https://www.ctci.org/article-index/?cat=86
