Transmision oil
I bought oil online and the container is not labelled. It seems to be very thin. Is there a way to check/test?

What type/kind and weight did you think you were buying ? Ford wants 600W to be used. That works out to about 180-240 weight. So 140 or 250 works fine. I don't notice much difference between them. Some 600W is gear oil with STP added. I'm not a fan. STP is not a lubricant. |

The former MARC tech advisor ran his '30 Model A on straight 100% STP in the transmission and the rear end for over 50,000 miles. No issues and when checked he stated the STP was a honey color and had worked just fine. If you need verification check the MARC archives. |

Re: Transmision oil
the referenced tech advisor was Roger Kauffman, use that in your search on the MARC site.

Re: Transmision oil
I have used half STP and half 600w for years, no leaks and no problems.
Enjoy. |

Re: Transmision oil
Modern oils have additives that extend the life of the gears and bearings. Use a heavy duty 85W-140 G5 gear oil in your transmission and rear end. 600 W meant something is 1930 but not today. It is no telling what you will get.

Re: Transmision oil
I have been using the Snyder's brand M-533, it is some thick stuff, stinky too, once it warms up, trans shifts easily. With the lighter oil, I was grinding gears a bit. YMMV

Re: Transmision oil
For what it's worth I use 140 GL-4 gear oil and don't have to worry about what it is and if it hurts yellow metal. Use what you have.

Re: Transmision oil
Back when Studebaker owned STP we had to push that crap. Scientifically Treated Petroleum is nothing more than a 'friction modifier' ,whatever that is. The only thing I've seen it do is stop old worn engines from burning as much oil.

I went to oil companies website
600W steam cylinder oil ha listed uses for steam engines and worm gears 600 series of industrial gear oils listed use as spur gears, bevel gears—- I got a pail of Shell omala 680 ,looks, smells, and pours like the oil i drained out of old transmissions, it’s made in synthetic versions too. |

Re: Transmision oil
My question was ..."is there a comparison test or some way to test" It pours the same as my engine oil

Re: Transmision oil
Jerry, If there is no specification on the bottle, you are buying a pig in a poke. If it pours like engine oil then the viscosity is way to low. There is a way to do a pour test for oil and you can rig that up yourself by poking a hole in the bottom of a can. Time a known viscosity oil to empty out of the can then compare that to the oil being tested. Test a couple different oils of known viscosity to get a range. Test all the oils at the same temperature.
