Re: Flathead Jack
Jack was one of my best customers.
Website is down, email is defunct and phone disconnected. Dammit.

Re: Flathead Jack
Bought some good stuff from him.. heard it was for sale, sad to hear it’s shut down, which means no one picked it up.
But sure someone will step in and buy assets. I hope. |

Re: Flathead Jack
Jack's stuff was a little expensive, but he answered the phone. I loved the catalog because it explained stuff. I bought the powerflow valves from Flathead Jack because it described how they had the groove at the right place, not requiring shims. But that service and knowledge based business model is no longer sustainable.
As much as we all like to complain about Mac's, having them come under a volume based business model at Eckler's will keep our hobby going for maybe another generation. After that very few will have the inclination, much less the knowledge and skills to work on old cars. My grandson probably could not find the hood release on his car. The good news is that modern cars hardly ever break; the bad news is that when they do, there is no way for a regular Joe to even attempt a fix. I just bought my wife a new car (to use on days when it is too messy to drive her '34 pickup) and I did not even look under the hood. In the unlikely event that I ever get a low oil light between changes I am pretty sure the dip stick will have a yellow handle. But in the meantime, it is great to have this site to share information and thoughts about this pastime. |

Re: Flathead Jack
Gary, I heard that C. W. Moss bought his inventory but I can't confirm that.

About dipsticks on modern cars: Did you hear about the computer geek that took his dipstick to a parts counter and asked for a new one? Counterman: "Why a new dipstick? This one looks fine!" Geek: "I need a longer one. This one doesn't touch the oil any more." |

Re: Flathead Jack
WOW, about when did this happen? I know I was in his online catalog seems like a few months ago. I bought a LOT of parts from him for my first FH build. Shortly afterward I ordered some other parts and asked he send me one of his new catalogs, and was told they're not free, cost 5 bucks! Course I remarked I just spent 3 grand and have to pay for a catalog, well bill me and send it. Box of parts arrived with a catalog, written on the front cover as "Scott, here is your first and last free catalog" signed Flathead Jack. I really liked the guy.

Re: Flathead Jack
I think I only bought one of his catalogues as the online version was a exact page by page copy of the hard copy. Probably the best online catalog I have ever used, educational too.

Re: Flathead Jack
Jack had some parts that I can't find else where, and the conversations with him were first rate. So I paid a little more, but I had a good feeling when I hung up, going to miss that.

Re: Flathead Jack
I ordered some stuff a few years ago and he said the dragster was for sale. I haven’t dealt with him for awhile.... Mark

He was a good dude and loved his catalog. Hope someone takes over his inventory and business.

Re: Flathead Jack
He called me one day and I answered, "Women's Shoes, may I help you?" From then on when he ordered, it was "A pair of CFM stilettos with fishnets!"
Only the two of us knew what he meant! Miss him and his humor!

Re: Flathead Jack
A few years ago I and two other fellows drove to Jack's store in Walnut Creek. We were there before he showed up and we waited in the parking lot. He showed up walked over to us and said "what the hell do you guys want ?" The driver said "nothing" and we drove off.

Re: Flathead Jack
I ordered one of his catalogs once. There was a lot of neat stuff, but he would not be "oversold". I never did buy anything from him.
