Default Ford Terminology

Does anyone know what Ford means by:
R.P.O.
BAD
BAC
BAR
I have seen, I believe these abbreviations used in the parts catalogs and the Trim and Body sealant book.

Thanks, Jim

R.P.O. is REGULAR PRODUCTION OPTION.

What period catalog did you see the others in?

The 1958 set of books, I have the 58 parts catalog, the Electrical ASSY Manual and the Body, Trim and Sealant Manual. The abbreviations are used in the Body, Trim, etc. manual.
The best example is for the Installation-Steering Column Cover Plates and Seals-Dimmer Switch and Hand Brake Cable Cover it reads "---------MODELS All BAD-------".
The part number listed for the Dimmer Switch cover is 'BAC-13535, for the Hand Brake Cable its BY-73001641 for the 'Pad- Steering Column Opening Cover Plate' its BAD-7001771 also for that part number description it reads 'Regular Production for 6 cylinder Models, R.P.O. for 8 cylinder models'

EDIT -

The below post is incorrect. It seems MS CLEO has cut my account and fed me false information.

Refer to POST #5 for the correction ...

*******************************

OK ...

I think what you are seeing is the sheets referring to PN's to easily ID what goes where.

Those are ENGINEERING PN's, not SERVICE PN's.

Sometimes you can convert an ENGINEERING PN to a SERVICE PN with an correct period OSI (Obsolete - Superseded - Interchange) CATALOG

Where did you come across PN - BAD-17503-A ? 17503 is an ENGINEERING BASIC PART NUMBER as you won't see it in the MPC TEXT.

- AND THE LORD SAYETH, LET THERE BE LIGHT! -

What we are seeing here is an early PN SYSTEM that was superseded by a later system. This previous system will not show in the 1949/59 MPC TEXT FINAL ISSUE (1964). One would need a period correct CHASSIS CATALOG to ID these PN's.

BASIC PN 17503 must have been the PN for the kit and would have given a complete parts kit breakdown incl the PUBLICATION NUMBER of the sheet(s).

That's what is going on. The PN for the ACCESSORY KIT was BAD-17503-A.

Now seeing as I am too damn cheap to purchase a period CHASSIS CATALOG, these bits of wisdom flash to me (very rarely) in a typical incoherent brainstorm, usually within ten to twenty moments of consuming a TACO HELL MONTEZUMA'S REVENGE PARTY PLATTER (w/ cold drink).

That is where you will find the PUBLICATION NUMBER to help ease the search (or find an intact NOS kit).

ATTACHED - CASE IN POINT -

EARLY PN SYSTEM SERVICE PART - 17664 - PUMP ASSY.

BAD-17664-A was replaced by B8A 17664-A in the replacing PN SYSTEM.

And this current revelation answers the first post -

BAD will be a PN PREFIX INDICATING MODEL YEAR the part was released for.

Thank you for all the insight into Fords part numbers. What is the correct Chassis Catalog then for a '58? As I have the one Jim Osborn reprinted.

So maybe a B8A-17503-A for the drawings, would be a correct number ? I have the MPC dated 1964. My previous question is incorrect, I should have aske is there an updated (1964) Body, Trim and Sealant Catalog for the 1958 cars?

What you have on CD is the 1949/59 FORD MPC FINAL ISSUE (1964). A chassis catalog is a quarterly released parts catalog issued during the production year(s).

The info you need will be in that catalog.

No and no.

In 1959, FORD issued a REGULAR P&A BASIC PN (17A603) for the KIT(s) -

Any idea what the Ford part number would be for the Chassis catalog that I need? The you pictured was for 55-57. I hope they actually did one for 58.
Thanks

Let me get my butt out of a possible blow-back -

The EvilBay Seller indicated on his site that B8A 17664-A was the REPL PN for BAD-17664-A. I have no idea if this is true or not as I do not have the period correct cataloging or a period correct OSI CATALOG to breakdown the 'BAD' PREFIX.

Just make sure it looks somewhat correct before bringing it home.

OK ...

Looking at the site again, the container has both early and late PN's so it has to be correct for a 58 FORD.

I found an updated PN for the 58 FORD KIT.

It is (was) B8AZ 17A603-A.

It only indicates the KIT PN and does not give a KIT PARTS LIST BREAKDOWN.

This was found in the 1949/1961 FORD CAR MPC & ACCESS CATALOG FORM 4635 - REV 24 - SEP 1959. It does not show in the MPC FINAL ISSUE (1964) so that indicates it was deleted.

So that gives you two KIT PART NUMBERS to look for to hopefully find the correct INSTALL SHEET.

I guarantee someone has this sheet in their tool box or workbench and doesn't realize it.

Yes, hopefully someone will NOT have tossed it out and kept it. Maybe they will see this thread and be kind enough to scan it and attach it to this thread.

Thanks to any and all who do!!!
