Default Help on removing winshield glass.

O.K I need some help. I want to remove the windshield glass from the frame and don't really know how to go about it. It's a 31 frame. I removed the two upper machine screws from the backside of the frame. Now do the swing arm brackets need to be drilled out also and removed. Then does the frame lift off or slide down , I have no clue. I'm not going any farther until I hear from you guys that have done this before. I'll be settin here holdin my breath.
Thanks. James.

Here's how to do it assuming everything's old & crusty & stuck.
Good frames are getting scarce, and most of the bottom corners are rusted out or very fragile.
The act of dissassembly is enough to break the corners so try & go easy.
Pre-soak the upper corners with a good penetrating oil.
Each upper corner has 2 screws on the side & 1 on the face. Take your time with oil and a new screwdriver tip and try to save the screws as they fit better than the new ones.
At this point run a single edge razor blade (in one of them little blade holders) under the glass all around to help release the seal. The holder will allow you to cut deep with less chance of an accident.
I use a length of wood laid flat on the glass and tap the upper channel off starting with the corners.
Be aware that each upper corner has 2 L shaped tangs firmly rusted inside the channel. If the penetrating oil doesn't work, try a little heat from a propane torch and just tap, tap.......going real easy...
Be carefull to keep the channel straight as you tap it upwards.
Try to NOT bend the sides outwards, but rather slide the glass up and out of the frame. Penetrating oil soaked into the bottom and side seal might help release it if she's super stuck, together with heat & the razor blade.

*Tip...observe how well the old glass fits, does it appear too big? ...too small? If it fits well, that's your best pattern to make the new windshield. Good luck with it.

So Craig, I'm actually tapping off the upper part of the frame, correct ? Then working on sliding the glass out ?
James.

Yes. Just be carefull as I say with the bottom corners as the glass will sometimes stick and the metal can be like a big cookie...rusted and crumbly.
I found a descent frame and got away with just re-welding the cracked corners.
You haven't said what you're all doing with yours
...new glass, total restoration, chopping...or what?
These pictures might help.

Thank you Craig,
The pic's really helped. And to answer your question I'm just needing to do some work on the frame and also replace the glass. No chopping. I'm gradually working on what someday will be a Huckster. It's a 31 that started life as a pick up.
James.

Does anybody knows about how to do it in a 1929 Phaeton windshield frame?
