Default Cam choice for a blown Flathead

Hi,
what cams would you use in a blown 284ci engine?
I read Joe Abbins books and he would use a 400JR

But if you ask cam grinders or read a book(Pat Ganahl) about supercharging
They say you need more duration (to bleed off some preassue at low rpm)

I know that a Flathead engine is different and Joe has probably more
experience in blown Flathead and most people, but i like to
hear different options.

Pay attention to the cam grinders. They understand why the lobe separation angle needs to change for a blower and what the ramp characteristics need to be.

ANY cam will work with a blower. However, the manufacturers want you to be happy with their products so they have the computer programs and engineers design products specifically for end use satisfaction.

Pat Ganahl is a great technical writer & researcher & respected in the community. Joe Abbin is an engineer who builds flatheads that really run hard. Joe's theorys are backed up on the dyno. Joe also says the real dyno is the asphalt.

There's a big difference between street and racing, Joe build a great deal od power from his engines, however you ma want to tame things down for the street. The cam grinder can offer some suggestions to the application.

Joe Abbin builds great engines for both the street and track. He has spent alot of time testing what works and his work is proven on the dyno. His books are great reading, not about something that was done in the fiftys. He backs his work up with graphs and shows the net hp for each. It cant get any better .

If you go to davetatom.com website and to the parts he has made, read what he has on cam grinds he has for blower motors near the bottom of the page on cams. Better yet, call him at the number listed and tell him what kind of boost you are going to run and what kind of application it is, street or strictly racing.
