V8 flywheel
I have a lightened flywheel from an old 59ab motor. Can I bolt this up to an A crankshaft? Thanks, Art

Re: V8 flywheel
I think it will bolt up, but I do not think the starter will engage properly. Maybe someone else knows a trick to make it work.Rod

Re: V8 flywheel
you need to change the bendix
also it helps if you drill a pilot bushing in the bellhousing to keep the starter main shaft from deflecting and bending there is a great post on the hamb about how to do it tk

Re: V8 flywheel
I would dump the later flywheel and go with all Model A parts. You are opening Pandora's box.

Re: V8 flywheel
You have to be very careful and try to get as much engagement of the Bendix gear into the starter ring gear. It would seem that some of the repop gears are harder and more brittle than the originals and shatter. The most common cause of breakage is the engine kicking back with the lighter weight flywheels. I install a 5/16" helicoil in the Bendix driving hub and use the 5/16" bolt to gain a little more clearance. Most of the information is from an article by Mike Hart in an early copy of the S O S S. I think you can buy a custom starter to do this but haven't spent enough time to locate source.

Re: V8 flywheel
Another way is use a gear drive starter conversion.
No more bendix problems..No kick back problems..No problems.. |
