Default Speedometer Question

Just purchased a speedo at Columbus, seller said it was rebuilt a couple years back. Looks rebuilt, only 3 miles on it. But it turns very tight. How can I loosen it up.I can run it with a drill motor, but to tight for speedometer cable. Thanks in advance for any information. It is for my 28 Phaeton..

There is a nut in the bottom of the speedo where the cable mounts into. It is a spanner type nut (two small holes). It is pined from the side. If you don't have a spanner some time you can use a couple of small drills with a rod or screw driver between them and back the nut off just a little. The grease has probably dried up a little. You can also try a shot of WD-40 around the shaft and that may also loosen it up. Good luck!

I would use kroil to loosen it. Seems like I've heard WD-40 can be harmful on pot metal. I know when I sparyed it on some new nuts and bolts I had in a plastic container it warped the container after a few months.

I'm working on loosening up a speedometer I bought 2 days ago at a swap meet. I've loosened some shafts by removing the Numer wheel and spring on the top, then very carefully with a flat tip punch tap down on the shaft. This was all it took on two speedometers I worked on, but be careful as the shaft is very thin by the top with the nut.
