Re: The forgotten 1960 Fords
Here is another interesting picture of a Junk Pile of 50's and 60's American Cars. Note the 1960 Ford Galaxie lower left. It could be a Convertible? Imagine if many of these cars could have been saved? |

Re: The forgotten 1960 Fords
It's a shame. I don't even see any rust on any of the cars in all of the rust prone areas like rocker panels and quarter/fender bottoms.

The tail of another '60 is behind the El Camino hulk, red, center top. rough looking paint. No rust to be seen... lots of straight chrome

Sad, the great planned obsolescence. Even in the ads from the day telling you how impressed everyone would be with your new purchase.

Re: The forgotten 1960 Fords
To bad but back then they were just junk. Something like the cars that are getting crushed that who knows what they will be worth 50/60 years from now. Ah for a time machine.

Re: The forgotten 1960 Fords
Those pictures show "Business as Usual". Scrapers only care about the price of steel per ton.
In the sixty's, I was a mechanic in Orange Co. Not only that but, it was the time that I owned MY '60 Ford. We had a small wrecking yard (about 1 acre), for our tow service (AAA) and we where on the police tow list also so, we had a lot cars coming in some never left on their wheels. There was ONLY so much room! I saw a lot of cars get scraped. They would pull the tires/wheels, engine, trans and gas tank then, crush the top, stack them on our 2 1/2 ton flat bed and haul them to Long Beach, CA to the scrape yard. I would have loved to have a lot of them (especially a cherry 49 Ford business coupe) but, where was I going to put them? The one that I did save was a '65 Mustang 2+2, with a factory 271 HP engine. That was in '69, I paid my boss $600 for it. The owner was in his 40's at that time and what we would have called fantastic cars where worth about $100. He wouldn't have had the room to keep them (even if he wanted) as he would have to have much more property to even sell them as "junkers" for $100, EVEN if people would have wanted them. Imagine the property tax that would have had to be paid (in OC) to keep them, not to mention the extra property, itself, until they became classic and desirable, if he would have lived that long, to save them for us.

Re: The forgotten 1960 Fords
I lived in OC in the 60s and 70s. Where I got hooked on hot rodding and racing. Had a 57 gasser clone that I took to OCIR to race. Kept blowing the trans out of it. Luckly had a small wrecking yard down the road so would go in there and exchange for new one for $20. Got real good at pulling the trans out of that car. Ah the memories of youth.

Re: The forgotten 1960 Fords
My first car was a 60 ford convertible 352 4v carb auto red with a white top that my uncle gave me in 66 when I got my drivers license. The trans. was slipping but the car was mint. I went to the local junk yard and got another trans, but it and 2 other trans just couldn't stand up to the beating that a 16 year old was giving it. So I converted it to a 3 speed stick and drove it till my senior year when I traded it to a friend for a 65 mustang with a bad motor. Wish I would have kept the 60, funny thing is I never drove it with the roof down cause I liked the look of the car better with the roof up.

Beautiful 1960 Ford Country Squire. They look great in black with the contrasting wood grain sides. |

Re: The forgotten 1960 Fords
Thanks Fordlover for sharing. The 1960 Mercury Wagon was the last of the Pillar-less Wagons from Mercury. They were only available as 4 doors in 1960, 1959 being the last year of the 2 door Pillar-less Wagon. For 1961, Mercury started to share the bodies with the Fords, and also added a 6 cylinder engine for the first time in a full size car. There is a similar 1960 Mercury Commuter Wagon that lives in Brisbane. |

Here is a picture of the local 1960 Mercury Commuter 4 door pillar-less Station Wagon in Australia. It is a very fine example of a very rare car. Take a look at the size of that windscreen. They don't come any bigger than that? |

Great shot of a pair of 1960 Fords, a Ford Galaxie Sunliner Convertible and a Ford Fairlane Town Sedan Police Car. This great photo appeared on the cover of Special Interest Autos magazine many years ago. |
