Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
Hey - come on out, Lee! You only go around once in this life and waiting around for the right time is NOT an option! The internet is super slow again so I will just hit the highlights ....
Day 8 - we went to several great places today - NHRA Museum, Ron Magnus Upholstery, Pomona Valley Customs, Stockers Hot Rod Factory, Kennedy Brothers, and Fred's Custom Wiring. But the biggest surprise came at dinner ..... NHRA Museum was super - newly done since I was there in 2000 Ron Magnus - super nice, humble man who does fantastic work PVC - busy shop with a lot going on Stockers - up and coming having moved into a new shop last August with plans to expand Kennedy Brothers - LOADED with parts but very well organized IMHO Fred's Custom Wiring - Fred is extremely nice, had lunch for us, and tried to get a chance to speak with everyone .... For the surprise, jacksandeuces on the HAMB said he was going to dinner at a steak place with his friend Rick, Ron, and Robbie. George had said earlier that he wanted a steak dinner tonight - even had me in a headlock when he described it! So, myself, Randy, Earl, and George went to dinner with Jack and the boys ... Guess who I was parked next to at dinner? The "Rick" Jack referred to was none other than Rick Barakat - we had a great dinner and talked some outside after afterwards. Nicest guy you cold ever want to meet. I was thrilled when he took the following ... I had read about this car so many, many times and always wanted to build a 2-door like it - like the Scarab, I never thought I would ever get up close and personal to it. When Rick found out that I drove a flattie to the show, he even opened the door for me! Imagine that! LOL! A real pleasure meting you, Rick, and an unexpected highlight to my trip to be sure .... |

Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
Today was our first official day at the show. Since I am not a real roadster, I had to go back into specialty parking. $60 for each of us for the weekend, 3 days. We walked the swapmeet, or saw whoever was up and running. Made one score only - paid $10 for one uncut F-100 brake drum. I needed one to complete a set ....
Before that we had breakfast at Zeke's - great food, nice people. Then we hung out at the Early Ford Store with the tour we have been on. Nice group of cars and we had a pretty good time hanging out with folks ..... Since the swapmeet opened at 10, we left EFS at around 11 or so to go over to the Fairplex, skipping a lunch that was on the tour. After we were done strolling the swapmeet we went to the Socal Open House, and then over to Walden's open house. I will post some Socal pics here and Walden pics in another post ... |

Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
RB - can't take credit for the f-glass top - whole thing was fabbed by the previous owner and I bought it as a roller. I did finish off the top by patterning the look of the car from the one book by Don Montgomery with a 32 roadster coming at you. I just love that look .....

Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
Saw a several Barners today at the show - Mark, Zzlegend and his son Tim and he does look a bit like Billy Gibbons, Elmo Rodge, Wayno and we hung out for quite a while, and olb (??) UKhere on the forum and we talked Flatheads non stop. The only pic I got was with Zzlegend dummy that I am!
Very hot today and at one point Randy and I sat up on this veranda and did not move for over an hour and a half, but a great day none-the-less. We finished up the swap meet and cruised the roadsters that were there and all the big vendors. Rick found a 32 radiator cap surround for half the new cost, I picked up a couple things at limeworks, and a few shirts. Now Al was talking about our trip to the LA Roadster folks and they were very appreciative of us being there. So much so that they gave everyone in the grouo the special commemorative book they were selling and we were all invited to the dinner with all the roadster entries and all those involved with the show. They were really happy we made the trip to the show and they meant it .... thank you for putting on a great show! |

Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
Tom, what can I say. I was really glad to meet you and your buds and shake your hand. You guys deserve a big kudos for making that drive out here. My son said,
"That's a long trip and he did it with a flathead. Now that's cool". I said yep. Hope you guys have a safe trip home and have cooler weather ahead. Keep in touch on the barn my friend. Mark. |

It is the people you meet and the bonds you make that really make a trip like this worth while - the pleasure was all mine, gents, the pleasure was all mine.

Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
Haha - you are funny! Yes, a one day run for sure ...
But before that I have the NSRA Nats in Pueblo, get home, 3 trips to visit family, build my 5-window and in general, drive/run all over the place ( Carlisle, Hershey, family Birthdays, and the list goes on and on ....) almost up until Thanksgiving .....

Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
We took it easy today knowing we will have a very, very early day on Monday, 3 AM, trying to beat the heat. We hope to hit Gallup, NM and perhaps Earl and I will go a little further to visit johnrodz here on the Fordbarn who is visiting his wife's family in Grants, New Mexico just 40 miles down the road from Gallup.
So, for today it was a nice long sleep in (I really needed it), did some laundry, visited some of my wife's family who live about 50 miles away and got a home cooked meal - oh yea, was that ever appreciated by us! But by doing so, I also got to test the roadster in extreme heat - 105 plus - at speed and in traffic. With running hard, temps were 175, 180 uphill, no more than 175-180 in traffic. So, the high 100+ temps that have been predicted for the next week, even in Pueblo, should be OK on the car (I hope!)

Re: Making a Run to the LA Roadster Show and Beyond
Thanks, Tim and great news Dave! Trip across the desert went great - engine temps were 175-180, 47-48 lbs oil pressure, about 16.5 mpg. Almost in Seligman, AZ - working our way UP to Flagstaff. Got Earl driving so I can post updates in real time!
