Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
I don't know that it really needs to look like a truck. The sedan deliveries are a car based commercial vehicle. I think the wide whites give it more of the look of a an up scale commercial car. Think of an exclusive grocery store or florist delivery car.
BTW, you have a very nice one there. |

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
Thanks everyone....
I thought the whitewalls looked nice... but just not what I wanted.... I plan to use this as a bit of a daily driver and also a tow vehicle for a vintage racecar from time to time....haul parts in it.... not so much worry about cleaning whitewalls and polishing hubcaps.... plus I have a dirt driveway.... I've got other projects(unfinished) for a night on the town... whitewalls and all! The basket is actually what I bought... the '39 came with it!

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
Thanks guys...
I spent a little time fiddling with the '39 today... Found some newspapers stuffed here and there... I have been unable to get the seat to slide back... I decided that it wasn't worth fighting it while bolted in... so... out she came!... only broke one bolt! Apparently at some point the mounts had broken... probably unknown to the drivers... it eventually cut through the floor... I'm sure they noticed it at that point! so they pulled the seat.... brazed the mounts back together and patched the floor by laying chunks of sheet metal over the holes! anyways... heres a few photos... I'm still a big fan of the new tires!!! Keep catching myself stopping and staring at it! haha

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
39.1 degrees in the garage...not bad till the cold floor works its way through your shoes!.... tried to atleast get a little done...
took out the floor mats and cleaned up all the "crap" hard to see... but... holes were never drilled to mount the passenger seat... seems a shame to do it now if I find a seat... also removed the non factory Purina Cow Chow steering column to floor seal! floor mats are a little worse for wear... but... atleast enough there to see what they were like Anyone have a clue about this heater? I know its not "correct"... but what year is it from? (tropicair) hoses are routed sort of strange... I'm guessing to possibly warm the fuel in the carburetor??? Thats all for today.... I know these aren't exciting updates... but since this vehicle is sort of rare... figured I would share whats happening... maybe it will benefit someone in the future.... Zach

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
Thanks...
The floors are excelent! (for central PA) Seems the only real major rust repair will be on the bottom of the drivers door... the drivers rain gutter.. and a small amount in the bottom of the B pillar ... the left front fenders needs some attention and then a few other dings dents and tears.... plus on the rear door the bottom hinge is bad...and the very tip of one corner of the door is rusted through... Frame and all major floors are solid as can be.... but seems if it were outside not too much longer it would be gotten a lot worse.... I am not 100% sure what the plan is yet for repairing things... still in a huge debate over wether or not... or how much to restore... I have a million other projects going on... and no heat in the garage... so for now its more just dissassembly and assessing certain things.... Zach

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
I spent some time today in the engine bay...
One thing led to another and I decided to pull the intake.... PHEW... she's pretty grunged up! Lots of black carbon like material in the intake ports... and a nice thick layer of gunk inside the top of the block... I figured its not worth risking things trying to get the motor running as-is... so i pulled the heads... Looks like a nice solid block... not a ton of wear in the cylinders...and no noticable cracks in the typical places...

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
That is a great looking delivery..it just oozes class.I hope you find a place to put those old newspapers back in there somewhere...they`re part of it`s history now.
I like the idea of you using it as a workhorse....just get it mechanically sorted and safe to drive and then just do what is needed when it`s needed to keep it going....no fake "patina" there, it`s the real deal ,battle scars and all.I love it. |

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
If you are careful and do a lot of flushing, you can do a pretty good desludging with just pan and manigold off...remove the baffles, scrub away with lots of solvent in valley until all moves downstairs. Repeat in upper crankcase, rorating the assembly and hosing away gnerously to get rid of all the stuff that lodged there. Take a break and have the actual pan hot tanked...
You really should go to PCV for engine protection ( I think I can replicate a 1943 OEM setup with available parts, now), but at least go to 180 thermostats to slow down recrudification. Get rid of the adaptor that is holding gauge sender 3" up in the air...your gauge has NO idea what's going on in the engine! Scrape away carbon on ridge in cylinders, see if you have serious wear ridge or not. See if engine is original sleeved version or not... |

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
thanks Bruce,
I think I am going to pull the motor out and try more or less what your saying to clean it up the best I can... go from there... may have to talk to you about the PCV set-up.... The gauge sender riser isn't making much difference considering the total lack of a tube running to the gauge any more... I'd really like to make this as reliable and fuel efficient as possible... doubt dual carbs are the right thing for that... but... hmmmm something was bugging me about wanting to see this sitting on there! I had yet to pull any drums... so off came the left front... all looks great in there...good bit of meat left on the shoes still... Next I figured I might as well start dissassembling the drivers door as it is the worst part on the whole car.... what I thought was rot from water after the rain gutter rotted off... seems as though it may have been the fault of the mouse nest inside... All in all the rest of the door is really nice... so just patch-er up on the bottom The garnish has some really nice maroon paint on the inside... I assume this is the same color the dash was painted originally too...(commercial, so was not woodgrained I guess) **looks brown in this pic.. but in person it looks like a dark maroon you can see the radio block off has different color lines then the dash panel finally... made an attempt to photo the door glass "bug" 7-38

Re: My new 1939 Sedan Delivery!
Like that intake. Just jet/pv the carbs way down maybe.
In florida the door rot would just be extra air conditioning. |

Zach this is awesome man!!! I've been falling in love with '37 Sedan's and Deliveries lately and I'm dumbfounded how you always scoop up cool projects like this '39!!! You're like the Chris Swenson of the North East!
Congrats!
