Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic,
That could have been a disaster! I shudder to think of the damage that could have been done. Glad you caught it! Lesson learned! I haven't got my transmission out yet but when I do pull it the engine will be supported with a jack stand. Bud

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Bud, that's a good idea, to use a jack stand, I didn't think of that. We're planning on doing a transmission swap in the '51 F-1 (if we ever get finished with the Zephyr...) I've got a rebuilt '49 Merc transmission with over drive that I want to install. I'll remember the jack stand to support the Flathead in the truck. Vic

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Bud, you know I'll post photos of the swap... I know we'll have to shorten the drive shaft and I'm sure there will be additional modifications, ain’t nothin’ easy... Just more fun that's all. Vic

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Thanks Henry. Now, my New Year's resolution is to try to spend more time playing with and driving our Flatheads...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Well, it looks like we'll be starting the New Year off on the right track... This Saturday a bunch of the Cigar City Flathead guys will be coming over to my garage to play. Hopefully we'll get a lot done. Steve is bringing his '46 Coupe so we can replace the transmission mount, Mike (if he gets the new brake shoes in time) will bring his '41 Business Coupe so we can install the rear brake shoes, I'm also expecting John (Old Ford 2) and Don to stop by and lend a hand. Oh yeah, I hope to disassemble the '46 transmission and install the gear set in the '39 Zephyr case...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Today was a "Red Letter Day" in the annals of playin' with Flatheads. Mike, Steve, John, Don and Cliff all showed up to help with the '39 LZ. Mike and I disassembled the '46 Ford transmission, cleaned and transplanted the gear set into the '39 LZ gear box, with a little help from Steve.
After we closed the transmission and topped it off with oil, Mike and John got in the Zephyr and I got underneith to do the transmission install. Once we got everything for the transmission hooked up, Steve and I pushed the rear forward so Mike and John could join the drive shaft to the tranny and hook up the clam shell, etc. After that we installed the rear spring, shocks, etc. and went for pizza... I just got back to the garage and put the rear tires on the Zephyr... now I'm too tired to do any more so, I guess I'll get back to it tomorrow. Thanks as always for all the help and fun. Vic

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
No beer Lawson, it’s either Southern Table Wine (ice tea for those unacquainted with southern gentilities) or Coke... Chuck, we did get a lot done today, I hope I can button up the loose ends tomorrow and get her ready for a test drive... Only problem is, I can't get the front seat in by myself... if I have to, I'll sit on the Igloo cooler just to drive around the block...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Lawson,
I know about the pizza. I've had the opportunity of having some. I'm just a little jealous of the working conditions. It's been in the teens and low 20's here this week. Thats not conducive to getting much garage work done. |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
When I am fortunate enough to get some of the guys to help me I take them to Mamie's, a local country cooking place and buy their lunch. Can't get any work done after we're stuffed. LOL

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Hey Vic, You guys really did get a lot done today. Many hands makes light work, we used to say. I hope you don't have to get that gearbox open again anytime soon!

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Hey Vic, looks like another fun day in the Florida sun working on the LZ. I wish I was part of that team right now. I could use some warm weather and a slice or two of good pizza .
Jeff, Henry and I should think about forming a club chapter here in MD. We would just need to think of a good name. Just before Christmas we removed the top from their Phaeton. It's getting new top irons and a new canvas top. That Phaeton is going to look real spiffy at the Lake Tahoe GNM!

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished...
I was thrilled that we got so much done on the '39 LZ yesterday. I finished up all the loose ends this afternoon (just enough to take her for a test drive). If you've been following our exploits, you know that the transmission jack that we had supporting the V-12 lost fluid and fell away from the engine. Initially, I didn't see any obvious damage however, when I fired her up, oil was gushing out from the sending unit. I shut her off and took a closer look only to find that the sending unit must have hit the firewall when the jack failed... it must have snapped the unit or damaged the "T" fitting, I was too annoyed to look. So, no test drives today... Now I'm off to Lowe's for a large bag of kitty litter because the garage floor looks like the Exxon Valdes oil spill... Now I know what we'll be doing next Saturday...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Gosh Vic, I'm sorry to hear about the sending unit but glad you caught it and this didn't happen going down the road. Hopefully replacement sending units are not too difficult to locate. Hang in there! Steve
