I find a couple guide studs to be very helpful, but as Vince said, about 3" long should work fine.

There should be no fear of breaking an ear. Just use common sense when you tighten it, and stop if it doesn't feel right.

The guide studs, a frame spreader, and a friend to help are all good to have on hand.

I did get my neighbor to help..I'm not sure if I could have done it alone...

But its done.

I did not use the alignment studs, I did not need the spreader. With me rocking the engine and my neighbor pushing we were able to squeeze it in between the mounts..a little grease helped too...

Thanks for all the suggestions...

I'll let you know how it runs...

Thanks for the play by play report. Sometimes these adventures are like going to the dentist. Thinking about it before you go is sometimes more painful that the appointment. And the bill in both cases is always a shocker...

For sure the anticipation was worse than actually getting in there and doing it. Once I drained the fluids there was no going back.

The effort was well worth it. I can't imagine trying to set up the main and rod bearings from under the car, and getting the pan back on with a good, so far leak-free seal would have been tough.

I set out to change the clutch, pressure plate, throw-out, pilot and transmission bearings and the timing gear, along with adjusting the main and rod bearing clearances. also the gasket between the block and the flywheel housing needed to be installed, as there was none there.

I did all those plus the crank timing gear, new clutch actuating rod and bushings, oil pump shaft and gears, oil pump/distributor drive gear, and the distributor shafts.

Only 50 miles so far but I am pleased with the result. It runs smooth at 40 to 45 where it used to get a good vibration, and the new clutch and pressure plate really improve shifting. And it only leaves two or three drops of oil when parked as opposed the the 5" or 6" puddle it left before..that gasket made a huge difference.

The clutch pedal force is about 50% greater than before, and that is with all the linkage clean and lubed. That old pressure plate was just worn out, along with the clutch disc.

I think that's it for now.

Thanks to all for the input...

I'll let you know when I have 500 miles on it..

Randy

Great feeling to accomplish all that work yourself!
That's what makes the Ford Model A so Special!
