Hi Mitch,

Who do you recommend in Bucks County to powder coat rims? Also, any views regarding powder coat vs. painting rims?

Thanks for your help!

Sorry for the long delay.... yes, there is joy.

I have delayed for I did not want to cause any issues for an older gentleman that works there.

I used Vann's in Birdsboro.

Owner nixed the deal - as was expected.

The older gentleman took care of the financial details.... new wheels have been on the car.

I would recommend folks look for an outfit with more experience with powder coating Model A wheels.

I have had at least 4 bad experiences with powder coater shops in the past. I believe in the "trust, but verify" approach now days. PM sent to you regarding my other experiences, but here is an example of shoddy work which I stumbled into when I came back to a shop in Burleson, Tx. to check on my sidecar that was being coated there.

That metal table was where the fellow kept flipping the hack as he ground off the old paint. He flipped the hack body over many times and apparently hit those four end posts along the way. His use of a metal grinder left scratches and also did some oil-canning of the metal in one area from the intense heat applies with the grinding.

Dustless powder coat removal is something new, but better than what happened in this particular project. Soda blasting is also a better technique than just sand blasting in many cases. If you think Model A parts are hard to replace, tell me how easy you think a pair of '42 rear fenders would be if they were warped from a powder coating shop? Happened to me in the past, so I no longer go on recommendations of just anyone in using a pc shop. From improper prep to outgassing problems, you really need to discuss your parts, make an inventory before hand of what your turning over, discuss notifying you if any problems noticed and drop by unexpectedly to check on the progress as you go. Mark anything of value with a secret stamp to indicate it is your's. Don't trust any of these shops to do quality work until you actually see them in action.

Too coincidental for my beliefs that your wheels just happened to be the ones ruined, but the owner is restoring his own Model A. Call me a conspiracy freak in believing that, but that would at least be my first thought.

Here is a secret decoder ring you may want to purchase if you can find one from a Malt-O-Meal box so you can mark your parts in the future. :-)

I have learned that this happens more often than you would care to believe.

I knew of a very much original 1930 Cabriolet about twenty years ago, that was left off at a shop to have some minor work done. Older guy owned the car, had suffered a minor stroke and couldn't do the work himself. Anyway, while the car was there the shop owner was swapping out original parts for repop parts off of this car, and using them on a buddy's Cabriolet. It was pretty obvious and when the owner came to get his car, he pointed it out to the shop. Of course they denied it, and the original owner couldn't prove it.

That shop is long gone.

Jeff's story reminds me of a barner who posted a little while ago that his diamond B block was in for rebuild and when he went back to the workshop to check how it was going, they denied there had ever been such a block in there. Diamond B block lost.
I'd have kept a record of the number and reported it stolen, or at least told the workshop owner that I had and will but no questions will be asked if it is back here tomorrow. (Over here, before a car can be registered, the VIN and engine number are checked automatically against a list of all numbers reported stolen so an engine with a stolen number on it is worse than useless. If anybody tries to register it at any time, the Police want to know where it came from.)

FWIW ..... THOUGHTS:

Please try this inexpensive Psychiatric Remedy which can help most intelligent people:

Get a pencil and paper and make an August 24, 2016 list of all of today's worries like,

1. Wondering if you got screwed by the PC guy who did your Model A wheels.

2. Your neighbor's extra large dog crapped on your driveway right after pressure washing same.

3. Your overnight Amazon package arrived (2) days late.

4. Your McDonald's hamburger came loaded with melted cheese after you ordered it without cheese.

Please place this written list in a sealed envelope and read it a year later on August 24, 2017.

You will laugh at this old list ...... but ..... your new list ...... with the neighbor's large dog who gave a repeat performance on your driveway will be just as stressful only if you continue to dwell on it.

Why me? ............ it is just your turn .....we "all" need to be reminded "often" ....... not to dwell on the very "normal" unpleasant happenings that most of us experience in everyday life.

Sincerely hope these THOUGHTS help ...... today ...... and ....... a year from now !!!!!!!
